Venus Williams disease ... - Sports Health Fitness Weighty News

Venus Williams has a disease of fatigue, Sjogren?s Syndrome. She had to withdraw from the U.S. Open. What is her prognosis with this autoimmune attack? Stay tuned. She?s fighting to come back.

She looks the picture of health, but has troubles catching her breath, and has joint pain too. Think of lethargy writ large. Think of listlessness looming, glooming, and dooming. Know she?s 31. Is this it?

As far as she?s concerned? No way. ?I?ve been told it?s going to take three to six months for all the medication to sink in.?

This energy ennui may explain, in part, why answers for Venus?s less than stellar play in the majors since 2008, were in short supply. What were in large supply were her white blood cells: they?d multiply like crazy, not a good thing, apparently.

Women are wracked with Sjogren?s way more than men. It is pronounced SHOW-grins, hardly fitting. ?Out of the roughly 4 million Americans who suffer through it, 9 out of 10 are female.

Let us take a Venus Williams comeback as a given. But in what form should that comeback to elite, then peak, form take? Assuming her medication works, there is a chance that Venus will put on some pounds during the 3 to 6 or so months it takes for the drugs to do their deeds. (Currently there is no known cure for Sjogren?s: treatment is supportive and symptomatic.)

Extra weight means extra stress on the body. With that in mind she should start off slowly, gradually, so as not to engender Lateral Epicondylitis (fancy for Tennis Elbow), Rotator Cuff Tendonitis, or Knee Osteoarthritis. All are common calamities with tennis.

For aerobic training, with no strain, she could do a combination of elliptical and pool work, the latter involving running in the deep end. She could ride a bike. To ensure she doesn?t get bored out of her brains with these 3, once her doctors give her the OK, she could add in some cross training.

All of these exercises are to raise her game to her satisfaction (and to her opponent?s misery). Will she also self diagnose perceived weaknesses that may inhabit her tennis game?

OnlineTennisInstruction.com analyzed Venus Williams?s game. Let?s leave tactics out of the equation. If Williams takes stock of her physical proficiencies (which are legion) and problems in technique (much harder psychologically to face, yet defeat) what might the latter entail? One tennis analyst, Florian Meier, feels her second serve is not what it could be. If this is the weak link in her chain of racket command, would it be worth it to try and tinker, to test?

It?s not like she doesn?t have the dedication: Florian says she ?practiced for six hours every day at the Macci academy until she turned pro at age 14.?

Why should Venus make a comeback at all? She?s well respected by her peers and well rewarded by her sport. She?s scaled every tennis summit going, winning the 4 Grand Slams. And though American humorist, Arnold Glasow, wasn?t referring to Venus when he made this wisecrack, possibly the formerly ranked number 1 women?s singles star, and all of us, would agree with what he believes: ??Without the spur of competition we?d loaf out our life.?

Obviously Venus Williams, what with her business interests and public speaking appearances, such as at the Deloitte Women of Influence luncheon, in Toronto, Canada, would hardly be characterized as a dead beat. She?s continually improving herself in continuing education: Ms. Williams ?is pursuing a degree in business online from an Indiana college, school officials said.?? Back in March 2011, she was back to the proverbial drawing board, taking an ?Introduction to AutoCad? course. And she actively supports the Sun Life Rising Star program.

How frustrating it must have been for her, and her diagnosticians, to ponder why her game ? her program ? was unraveling. The enigma of Sjogren?s is that it is hard to detect. Dr. Frederick Vivino, chief of rheumatology at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, says: ??on average it takes a person six to seven years to be diagnosed with Sjogren?s?? There?s a double whammy; uninformed bystanders possibly think a sufferer may be gold-bricking or malingering.

Venus is no gold-bricker, but she is paving the way for success in others.

Have you heard of the ?Let?s Get Active? campaign? It is yet another of Venus?s philanthropic-business good deeds in partnership with the Jamba Juice Company, who started a mission to raise awareness on America?s obesity problem. They created a motto ?Team Up for a Healthy America.? ?As befits someone who knows defense and offense via tennis, Venus is not only a spokesperson with Jamba, but a franchisee. She opened her first Jamba Juice store in Bethesda, Maryland, this July. She has another 4 store openings planned for the D.C. region.

Venus summarizes: ?I am excited to play a role in getting America more engaged in healthy activities and believe that the ?Team Up? program is a meaningful way to help motivate our nation to get out and get active,?

Is Sjogren?s going to deactivate and deter a Venus Williams rebound to topnotch tennis? It seems unlikely. Obviously, the woman can multitask. Clearly she has drive, determination, destinations and direction to reach those destinations. Plainly, she has a zest for life. Even if by bad luck and ?the breaks? a total bummer should occur, with Sjogren?s forcing her from competitive tennis, she should be secure; she?s made her case, and earned her place as one of the tennis greats.

This of late: Venus Williams Twitter? She tweeted she?s looking forward to coming back on tour. Can?t wait.
