For many years now article marketing has been the "go to" marketing tool for small business owners who want to market their websites. Increasingly though, I've noticed that interest is expanding to larger companies as well. I received this question recently from someone who works at a large corporation:

I'm so glad that someone asked this! There is no reason why submitting articles wouldn't work for a large company, and I know many SEO specialists who work with large companies and who use article marketing as part of an overall online marketing plan for the company.

I just want to be sure that you understand how article marketing works, and I think that will help you to understand why business article marketing is not restricted to just small businesses, but would actually work for any size of business.

Article marketing is great for establishing the expertise of an author, but that's not the main benefit by a long shot. The main reason that people engage in creating free reprint articles is to get a higher search engine ranking for their website. This is how article marketing helps improve a web page's ranking:

You submit articles on the general topic of your website. These would not be articles about your business or your website, but they would instead be articles that teach your readers things that they need to know about your general niche.

You can discover the best keywords for your website by using a keyword research tool--there are many of these available online. When you do keyword research, you will come up with a variety of different phrases associated with the topic of your website, and you will alternate using those phrases in your resource boxes each time you submit an article.

So, that is how article marketing helps business owners--it can help your website to get a higher ranking, and the higher the ranking the more people will be referred to your website. The more targeted visitors who are referred to your website, the more potential sales and business for you.

Article marketing works for all types of websites, whether they're the static traditional website or a blog. Even among small business owners, not everyone has a blog--many are marketing traditional websites.

Casio XJ-H2650

The Casio XJ-H2650 isn't Casio's brightest projector, but it's part of Casio's Pro Series, which is its brightest line of projectors. It also offers WXGA (1280 by 800) native resolution, the highest in the Pro Series line. That's a moderately big deal, because until now, if you wanted a WXGA Casio projector you had to settle for one of the lower brightness models. The XJ-H2650 delivers the highest brightness Casio offers with WXGA resolution, and the highest resolution with Pro Series brightness, all of which makes it a good choice for mid-size conference rooms and classrooms.

Casio rates the XJ-H2650 at 3500 lumens, a bit less bright than the 4,000 lumen Casio XJ-H1750 Pro Series that I reviewed earlier this year. However, the XJ-H1750 offers a native XGA (1,024 by 768) resolution.

The only other Pro Series model with WXGA resolution is the XJ-H2650's near twin, the Casio XJ-H2600 ($2,000 street). Casio says that the two models are identical except for the addition of USB A, USB B, and LAN ports to the XJ-H2650, along with features that depend on those ports. Most notably, the XJ-H2650's USB A port lets you plug in a supplied Wi-Fi adaptor so you can connect directly with, and send data images from, Windows and Mac computers as well as most Android, iOS, and Windows smartphones and tablets.

The extra ports also let you plug in a memory key to read JPG and a few other file formats directly, control the projector over a network, send data images over a network, and add interactivity with an interactive pen and software option ($260 street). However, the interactive feature is hard to recommend, since the projector's standard-throw lens would make it hard to interact with the image without casting shadows that would get in the way. All other features on the XJ-H2600 and XJ-H2650 should be identical, so the rest of the comments in this review should apply to both.

Basics, Setup, and Connections
Like all current Casio projectors, the XJ-H2650 is built around Casio's hybrid light source, consisting of LEDs and a laser paired with a DLP chip. The LEDs produce the red and blue primaries directly. The laser shines on a phosphor element to produce green.

Not too surprisingly, given that both projectors are part of the same Pro Series, the XJ-H2650 shares a lot of its basic features with the XJ-H1750. In particular, it weighs almost the same, at 15.6 pounds, which makes it most appropriate for permanent installation or room to room portability on a cart.

Setup is standard, with a manual focus and a manual 1.2x zoom, which gives you some welcome flexibility in how far you can put the projector from the screen for a given size image. In addition to the LAN and USB ports I've already mentioned, connection choices include the usual HDMI for a computer or video source, VGA for computer or component video, and both S-video and composite video inputs.

Brightness and Eco Modes
In my tests, the XJ-H2650 was easily bright enough in its brightest mode for a 78-inch wide (92-inch diagonal) image to stand up to the typical level of ambient light in an office or classroom setting. Even better, it was bright enough at that size so you could easily take advantage of its eco modes to minimize power use and save on electricity.

Most projectors offer one bright mode and one eco mode that lets you lower brightness and power consumption. Beyond that, they offer color presets that can also affect brightness, but are, in theory, meant to adjust color.

The XJ-H2650 gives you more flexibility for brightness and power use, with two non-eco modes, which I measured at 340 watts and 290 watts, plus five eco modes, with a measured range of 260 to 115 watts. With multiple eco modes, you have the freedom to pick the best color setting first, and then choose the least bright mode with the brightness you need, instead of using the color presets to adjust brightness. Also worth mention is that the only projector I've seen with more eco-mode levels is the laser-based BenQ LX60ST that I recently reviewed.

Genetic sleuthing uncovers deadly new virus in Africa

An isolated outbreak of a deadly disease known as acute hemorrhagic fever, which killed two people and left one gravely ill in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the summer of 2009, was probably caused by a novel virus scientists have never seen before.

Described this week in the open-access journal PLoS Pathogens, the new microbe has been named Bas-Congo virus (BASV) after the province in the southwest corner of the Congo where the three people lived.

It was discovered by an international research consortium that included the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and University of California, Davis (UCD), Global Viral, the Centre International de Recherches M?dicales de Franceville in Gabon, the Institut National de Recherche Biom?dicale, Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Metabiota and others.

"Known viruses, such as Ebola, HIV and influenza, represent just the tip of the microbial iceberg," said Joseph Fair, PhD, a co-author and vice president of Metabiota. "Identifying deadly unknown viruses, such as Bas-Congo virus, gives us a leg up in controlling future outbreaks."

"These are the only three cases known to have occurred, although there could be additional outbreaks from this virus in the future," said Charles Chiu, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of laboratory medicine at UCSF and director of the UCSF-Abbott Viral Diagnostics and Discovery Center, who spearheaded the UCSF effort to identify the virus. Chiu and his team continue to work on new diagnostics to detect the virus so that health officials in Congo and elsewhere can quickly identify it should it emerge again.

One odd characteristic of the Bas-Congo virus, Chiu said, is that while a number of other viruses in Africa also cause deadly outbreaks of acute hemorrhagic fever?Ebola virus, Lassa virus and Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever virus to name a few ?the new virus is unlike any of them.

Genetically it is more closely related to the types of viruses that cause rabies, which are known to infect people with a very different sort of disease?a neurological illness that is uniformly fatal if untreated but may take months to develop.

An antibody test developed in this study was applied to the one patient who survived and to others who had come into contact with him. It suggested that the disease may be spread from person to person but likely originated from some other source, such as an insect or rodent.

The identity of this animal "reservoir" and the precise mode of transmission for the virus remain unclear and are currently being investigated by Metabiota and the central African members of the consortium through the PREDICT Project of USAID's Emerging Pandemic Threats Program.

How the New Virus Emerged

In the summer of 2009, a 15-year old boy in a small rural community called Mangala village suddenly fell ill and developed a bleeding nose, bleeding gums and bloody vomit. He rapidly worsened, dying within three days of the first signs of illness.

A week later, a 13-year old girl who attended the same school and lived in the same neighborhood as the boy came down with a similar, serious illness. She declined just as rapidly and also died within three days. One week after that, the male nurse who cared for this girl began showing the same symptoms, and he was transferred to a hospital in Boma, a nearby port city that sits along the Congo River upstream from Africa's Atlantic coast.

Members of the consortium, who had initiated a project to diagnose unusual cases of severe hemorrhagic fever, obtained blood samples collected from the nurse by the Congolese doctors and sent them to the laboratory of Eric Leroy, PhD, doctor of veterinary medicine at the Centre International de Recherches M?dicales de Franceville in Gabon. There the samples were tested for traces of any known virus, but nothing was found. The Metabiota scientists then solicited the expertise of Chiu at UCSF and Eric Delwart at the Blood Systems Research Institute (BSRI) in San Francisco to aid in the diagnosis.

The researchers ultimately identified a completely new virus as the cause of the mysterious illness through a powerful strategy for identifying novel pathogens known as "deep sequencing," in which millions of DNA sequences are generated from a clinical sample and then pieced together using computer algorithms combined with human analysis.

Distinct Attributes of Bas-Congo

The Bas-Congo virus belongs to a family of viruses known as the rhabdoviruses, a large family of viruses that infect plants, insects and mammals, including humans. The most famous member of this family is the virus that causes rabies. But even among the rhabdoviruses, Bas-Congo is something of an outlier, being very genetically distinct from other members of the family.

What's most unusual about this virus, though, said Chiu, is what it does to people.

No other rhabdoviruses are known to cause the acute, rapid and deadly hemorrhagic fever seen in the three cases in the Congo. Rabies, for instance, can be a deadly disease if untreated, but the course of rabies in humans is nothing like the rapid and deadly onset seen with the Bas-Congo virus. There is some precedent, however, for hemorrhagic disease from rhabdoviruses in the animal kingdom: fish rhabdoviruses are known to cause hemorrhagic septicemia?acute bleeding and death?in affected fish.

The third patient had enormous amounts of BASV in his bloodstream just two days after he fell ill?more than a million copies in every milliliter of blood.

The BASV sequence was also used to design an antibody test for the virus, an effort led by Graham Simmons at the BSRI, another member of the consortium. Antibodies are blood immune proteins produced in response to an infection. The antibody test allowed the researchers to screen both the third patient with acute hemorrhagic fever and other people who had come into contact with the third patient, including the nurse who cared for him in the Boma hospital. High levels of BASV-specific antibodies were found in the third patient, establishing that he indeed had been infected with Bas-Congo virus. The same antibodies were also found in the second nurse, even though he never actually became sick.

"What this suggests is that the disease may be transmissible from person to person?though it's most likely to have originated from some other source," said Nathan Wolfe, PhD, founder and chairman of Global Viral, and a co-author on the paper. "The fact that it belongs to a family of viruses known to infect a wide variety of mammals, insects and other animals means that it may perpetually exist in insect or other 'host' species and was accidentally passed to humans through insect bites or some other means."

What Your Business Can Learn From the Latest Bank Hacks ...

One by one, like toy soldiers, the country?s largest banks are tipping over to an unprecedented distributed denial-of-service attack, or DDos.

Two weeks ago test attacks started on smaller sites around the net. Then last week JPMorgan, Citigroup and Bank of America were assaulted. This week Wells Fargo, U.S. Bancorp and PNC Financial came under the digital hammer.

DDoS has been around for a long time. It?s basically a bombardment of a computer server with many requests. The Internet pipe gets overloaded, and the server ?breaks? or shuts down. In this case, these online banking sites received so much traffic their websites went down. Down time, of course, means money lost. A sustained attack can cripple sites indefinitely.

A group called Izz al-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters has claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating it?s a response to the YouTube movie ?Innocence of Muhammad,? which negatively depicts the Islamic prophet.

Defense against such an attack might look bleak, what with the nation?s largest (and we would hope most secure) financial services effectively beat. But there are a few preventative measures that can help secure your business.

? Recognize that DDoS could happen to your business.

? Review your current incident response plan. Does it include DDoS scenarios?

? Know what questions to ask: What?s the capacity and resistance of your gates to the Internet?

? Conduct annual cyber response incident tests. It?s important to test strategy and technical preparedness in case real DDoS hurricane blows at your door.

? Contact your ISP and find what measures they have in place to guard against DDoS.

? Review legal, contractual and insurance obligations related to business availability. Include third-party contractors if they have direct links to your network.

Ensuring that you have a game plan before the attack is the only hope you have against one.

In Iran, sanctions bite and currency collapses

TEHRAN ? Even though threats of war with Israel are almost a daily occurrence, what?s really on people's minds in this city is the economy.

The United States, the European Union and the U.N. have imposed tough economic sanctions against Iran, blocking access to the international banking system and curbing sales of Iranian crude oil as a way to persuade Tehran to abandon its nuclear program.

As a result, Iran?s currency, the rial, is in a constant state of flux, but mostly on a downward trajectory. These days, it seems to fall in value against the dollar on an hourly basis. On Tuesday the currency hit an all-time low against the U.S. dollar, trading at 26,500 to the U.S. dollar on the open market, according to Persian-language currency tracking website Mazanex.?

?Our money is becoming more and more worthless every day,? said Sarvenas Sadi, an elderly woman doing her daily shopping in Tehran earlier this week.

She picked up a handful of limes and exclaimed, ?These were 100 percent cheaper last year!?

Asked whether she ever thought she would see the currency devalue so much, she replied, ?Never! I remember before the [1979] revolution $1 was worth 70 rial, now it?s worth 26,000! Who would have ever have thought!?

Iranians feel the pain of sanctions: 'Everything has doubled in price'

Did she think things would ever balance out and the price of goods would come down to what they were before. ?Unfortunately I don?t think so. The thing with Iran is that once the price of something goes up, it never comes down again.?

So what?s the solution?? ?Eat less limes,? she jokingly replied.?

Manufacturing hit hard
The financial situation is affecting people from all classes. Thousands of workers have been laid off and have not been paid back wages because companies have simply run out of money. Majid, a 32-year-old mechanic who used to work for a large car company was recently laid off and is owed six months? salary.

?They are laying off people left, right and center. I doubt there will be a company left by the New Year,? he said, giving just his first name because of the sensitivity of the issue in Iran. Persian New Year will be on March 21, 2013.

The car industry, one of the biggest manufacturing sectors in Iran and a massive employer, has been affected dramatically; Iranian media have reported a 30 to 50 percent drop in car and component production in the past six months. Iran was the 13th-largest auto maker in the world in 2011, producing 1.6 million vehicles.

The Iran Khodro Company, the country?s leading vehicle manufacturer, had become the largest vehicle manufacturer in the Middle East,?Central Asia?and North Africa. ?The company won the annual national prize for export activities in 2006 and 2007 with Russia, Syria, Turkey, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Egypt, Algeria and Bulgaria among their key consumers.

But higher prices, due to the soaring costs of components as a result of the sanctions, have caused a drop in demand.

For instance, France's Peugeot Citroen halted shipments of vehicle kits for assembly in Iran earlier this year, saying international sanctions barring transactions with the country's banking system made it difficult to obtain sales financing.

Sanctions have taken a toll on the Iranian economy. The government is reluctant to admit it. Inflation is high. The number of young unemployed is a growing concern. NBC's Ali Arouzi reports.?

Majid, the mechanic, said he is looking for work elsewhere but it is proving very difficult. ?There are not many jobs going and it is getting me more and more depressed.?

Oil sales to travel - down
The oil sector has been hit hard too.? The Iranian Labor News Agency reported that a letter on behalf of 20,000 oil workers from across the country was sent to Labor Minister Abdolreza Sheikholeslami complaining that they had not been paid in months. The letter demanded an increase to the worker?s salaries of $120 to $285 a month, adding that at the current rate they were "way below the poverty line.??

Mohammad Reza Bahonar, a prominent Iranian member of parliament, said oil exports in June-July had dropped to "around 800,000 barrels per day," according to a report by ISNA news agency. That?s a low not seen in more than two decades, and less than half the 2.3 million barrels per day exported just a year ago.

But Minister of Petroleum Rostam Qasemi was quoted by ISNA saying that overall oil production this year "will be the same as last year."

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for a firm deadline for Iran to halt its nuclear program, using a simple drawing to warn the UN that Iran will soon reach the point of no return in its development of nuclear weapons. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

The strangling of the economy isn?t just affecting blue-collar workers.

Middle-class Iranians had become accustomed to foreign travel ? to Dubai, a playground for Iranians only an hour and half away, Turkey, one of only a few countries that does not require visa?s for Iranians, and Thailand. But the cost of travel to any of these destinations is prohibitive to many.

Maryam, a travel agent in Tehran who also only gave her first name, estimated that the number of travelers has been halved in a year. ?The price of tickets and organized tours increased almost a hundred fold. They say that this will boost domestic holidays, but I think that is even too expensive for most people.?

This was evident to me last month flying back to Tehran from London via Dubai. Usually the flight from Dubai to Tehran is jammed, but not this time. Business and first class were full with the super-rich of Iran, but 70 percent of the plane which makes up the economy class was almost empty.

As the American mission in Afghanistan winds down, dangers still abound for U.S. troops ? the most recent incident involved a Taliban gunman who fired on a U.S. Marine outpost in Afghanistan's Helmand Province. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Expected to get worse
Mehdi is a young entrepreneur who imports computers and accessories who also spoke on the condition of anonymity. He said people are just not buying in Iran right now. His biggest wish was that the value of the rial would just stay fixed against dollar ? even if it was at an unfavorable rate ? just so consumers would know how much things would cost in a weeks? time, a day or even in the next few hours.

While the sanctions have certainly taken a major bite out of the economy and are hurting people from all walks of life ? it does not seem to be making the government authorities buckle. If anything it seems to have stiffened the government?s resolve and things are set to become even more difficult in the not too distant future. ?

Britain, France and Germany are urging their European Union partners "to further step up the pressure" on Iran. Further sanctions targeting the Islamic Republic's energy, finance, trade and transportation sectors are expected to be formally adopted on Oct. 15.

At schools, in shops, and on the streets of big cities and small towns, daily life plays out in Iran.

Historically Spring and Fall have been the time for doing some major house cleaning. Perhaps these are the times when we change from winter to summer clothing or from summer to winter clothing. There are many charities that are ready, willing and able to relieve us of clothes and possessions that we no longer find useful. Having well organized and uncrowded cupboards and closets is a definite home improvement.
Real estate agents will recommend doing a good reduction in stuff if you are planning to sell your home. Storage space can be an issue when prospective purchasers are looking at a property. Some sellers have a tendency to put things in the closets to get them out of a room. This is really not a good idea because prospects will open cupboards and closets to check out space.

HTC One X+ spied in O2 (UK) sales flyer

HTC One X+

The rumored HTC One X+ just got a step closer to reality, as it's has made its way into a brochure for the UK carrier O2. What we're seeing looks delightful, fir an updated 1.7GHz CPU (likely Tegra3 based), 64GB of on-device storage, HTC stellar camera, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box.

Here in the states we've see a version come through the FCC toting AT&T's LTE radio bands, but the rumored specs don't quite match up as we've been hearing that it is a 32GB model. There's a good chance AT&T has decided to cut the storage in half like they did with the original HTC One X, but we can still hope it's a case of bad info and we'll be seeing a 64GB version on this side of the pond.

With enough evidence to call this one legit, it's about time for HTC to come forward and tell us what we want to hear and announce this one. New Windows phones are cool and all, but we want some Android!

NNG: Revenue Up 44% in 1H 2012; Automotive is 80% of Business

Navigation software vendor NNG has announced revenue up 44 percent for the first half of 2012. NNG realized 80 percent of this revenue with automotive customers.

NNG increased its gross margin of over 40% in 2011 and forecasts a 60% increase for 2012. NNG CEO Peter Balogh targets to sell 20 million navigation licenses in the next three years.

NNG also indicated that their online services platform Naviextras.com posted a 102% increase in revenue in the first half of 2012 compared to the same the period in 2011.

?Thanks to the automotive orders, we have good revenue visibility for the next 5 years,? wrote Balogh in an email to GPS Business News.

NNG has been so far a private company and they do not seem to have other plans thus far. When asked about a potential IPO, Balogh told us: ?I wouldn?t comment on our plans, but I think the stock exchange is a challenging place to be lately, with valuations based more on sentiments rather than business. And it certainly applies to some of the companies out there, trying to target the same market.?

Albertsons Recalls Ground Beef In 3 States Due To E. Coli Risk

BOISE, Idaho -- Alberstons said Monday that it is voluntarily recalling a number of ground beef products sold at its stores in Oregon, Washington and Idaho, due to risk of E. coli contamination.

No illnesses have been reported.

The grocery chain, which is owned by Supervalu Inc., said the move follows an expanded recall by XL Foods Inc. for ground beef products imported to the U.S. from Canada.

Albertsons is recalling multiple ground beef items sold in all of its stores in Washington and Oregon, as well as three stores in Northern Idaho: Coeur d'Alene, Hayden and Lewiston.

No other Albertsons stores are affected by the recall.

The raw ground beef products were sold at its full service counters at the customer's request or sold in packaged form with an Albertsons store label between Sept. 3 and Sept. 21. The products are no longer for sale at any stores.

Customers should return any of the recalled products for a refund or replacement.

The recall includes the following packaged products with the Albertsons store label:

1 lb. fresh ground Beef Patties with the UPC: 7-52907-60030 and "USE BY" date of 9/11/12

1 lb. fresh ground beef chub with the UPC: 7-52907-18271 and a "USE BY" date of 9/18/12 or 9/21/12

3 lb. fresh ground beef chub with the UPC: 7-52907-18251 and a "USE BY" date of 9/18/12 or 9/21/12

You can not sell anything unless you have all the information you need. You need a good solid direction, and to get that you need good solid information. You also need to know the market potential for their products, services and programs offered to understand. You need to choose products, etc. with an eye toward building a team, recruitment and obtaining and maintaining a good customer base. Without these things, you will be a MLM, Network Market salesman with a good idea, but not be able to achieve anything. Most likely, you will be out of business before you even get started.

Team building (those below you duplicating what you are doing), with a program or product / service, will significantly increase your marketing potential. Quite simply, the more people you have below you, the more business you can generate. The more business you generate, the higher your income. This is a great concept, but not always easy to reach - at least not alone.

With the expansion of its marketing potential, the type of people you target will also grow significantly larger. These people will have the opportunity to be part of your personal team and create secondary incomes, making use of the tools and training they receive.

To get an idea of how big your potential market is actually getting, you must understand that literally everyone in any group you belong to - personal, business, chat groups, clubs, is a potential member of your team. Moreover, any person in another MLM, Network Market program is a potential client.

Also watch for those people who are looking for a home based business. The numbers are staggering. If you can capture them and get them to work for you, not only do you benefit, but they also do. Imagine how many potential team members, and potential customers you can find in that one sector.

Chavez's record: an oil bonanza squandered?

CARACAS, Venezuela ?

On the streets of Caracas, vast slums blanket the hillsides while squatters hang laundry in the windows of abandoned buildings. Trash-strewn alleys are riddled with potholes and lined with broken streetlamps. The city's main waterway, the polluted Guaire River, is known more for sewage than swimming.

While oil has ushered in spectacular construction projects for glittering Middle Eastern cities, including the world's tallest building in Dubai and plans for branches of the Louvre and Guggenheim museums in Abu Dhabi, it's brought relatively meager changes to Venezuela, which holds the world's largest proven oil reserves.

Nearly 14 years after President Hugo Chavez took office, and despite the biggest oil bonanza in Venezuela's history, there's little outward sign of the nearly one trillion petrodollars that have flowed into the country.

Venezuela has undoubtedly changed during Chavez's tenure. The populist president has used the oil wealth to buttress his support through cash handouts, state-run grocery stores and a gamut of other social programs. With more money in the economy, incomes are higher and the number of people living in poverty has fallen.

Unemployment has dropped from more than 13 percent in 1999 to about 8 percent. The country has also achieved rapid improvement on the U.N. Human Development Index, which measures a range of indicators from living standards to life expectancy.

"We're applying a successful program - successful politically, successful socially, successful economically," Chavez said at a news conference. "With flaws, of course, but it's successful. We're laying the foundations of a historic project that will take our entire lifetime."

All of which makes him a tough incumbent to beat in the upcoming Oct. 7 election.

Yet some experts say Chavez could have done much more to improve the country's infrastructure, boost its economy and invest in the very oil industry that keeps Venezuela afloat.

"It's overwhelmingly clear that Venezuela has wasted the windfall," said Francisco Monaldi, an economist and director of the International Center of Energy and the Environment at Caracas' IESA business school. "You should have had much greater economic growth, much greater reduction of poverty."

Among Latin American countries, the economies of Brazil, Chile, Peru and Argentina all have expanded more rapidly than Venezuela's since Chavez took office in 1999, recording average growth between 3 and 5 percent a year.

Venezuela, by contrast, averaged a 2.8 percent annual increase of gross domestic product between 1999 and 2011, according to International Monetary Fund figures. By that measure, the country was outperformed by every other member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries except Libya. Even war-torn Iraq posted higher growth.

Some Venezuelans, such as tennis instructor Naybeth Figueroa, say Chavez has simply channeled money toward his "Chavista" supporters while neglecting deeply ingrained problems such as soaring murder rates, inflation, crumbling infrastructure and poor government services. Venezuela now ranks among the most violent and corrupt places on earth.

"The country is falling to pieces," Figueroa said. "Where is the oil money going?"

Where the money went

On a rutted unpaved road in the countryside outside Caracas, unemployed housewife Moreli Gonzalez lives in a shack with a dirt floor and walls made of rusting sheets of zinc. She is thankful to Chavez that she now receives a $280-a-month cash benefit through a program called "Mothers of the Neighborhood Mission."

"Now we have everything," said Gonzalez, who credits a government education program with helping her learn to read - and a state-run grocery down the road that has made food more affordable.

"We eat better," she said, showing off cupboards filled with bags of rice and pasta. "My children didn't used to eat snacks. Now they eat well."

The government programs for the poor are why Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez recently boasted: "This was one country before President Chavez's government, and a different one afterward."

He was referring to the more than $300 billion that the government has spent during Chavez's tenure on "social development," including health care and education.

It's been made possible by oil prices that have shot up, sending more than $981 billion in revenues to the state oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela SA, between 1999 and 2011.

Some economists say that given the boom, it's little wonder Venezuelans living below the poverty line declined from 50 percent in the first half of 1999 to about 32 percent in the second half of last year.

"There are people here who are eating meat who didn't used to eat meat. But is that due to Chavez? That's not due to Chavez. That's the result of the changes in the price of oil," said economist Angel Garcia Banchs, director of the consulting firm Econometrica.

The state oil company's contributions to the government have more than tripled, from $16.5 billion in 2004 to $58.6 billion last year.

And it's not all going to social programs. Chavez has spent billions on the military, buying up Russian-made fighter jets, helicopters and rifles.

University enrollment has also more than doubled. Low-income students now attend the tuition-free Bolivarian University, which was established on the leafy campus of a former state oil company office building.

One of the biggest expenses, though, has simply been supporting a growing bureaucracy. The number of public employees has ballooned during Chavez's presidency, from about 1.3 million to 2.4 million. And Chavez has made clear that if he's re-elected, "that's going to keep going up."

Black gold - but not for everyone

When a powerful explosion rocked the Amuay oil refinery last month, killing at least 42 people, several experts swiftly blamed the country's worst-ever refinery disaster on a lack of maintenance.

Last month, a deadly prison riot killed more than two dozen in an overcrowded penitentiary, the latest in a rising tide of bloodshed that left 560 people dead in the country's prisons last year.

That disconnect, between falling poverty and worsening infrastructure, points to what critics say has been a failure to address the underlying causes of many of the country's ills. Yes, government food giveaways mean millions of poor people have more to eat, but critics argue that Chavez's largesse has ignored basic remedies needed to modernize the nation.

While campaigning ahead of the presidential vote, opposition candidate Henrique Capriles has argued that more should have been spent to improve police forces, build water systems and invest in the oil industry instead of, among other things, "giving away" oil wealth through fuel deals with allies such as Cuba and Nicaragua.

Official figures support some of the criticism. The murder rate more than doubled during Chavez's presidency. Dangerous slums have proliferated, with the number of homes deemed "inadequate" growing from 295,000 in 1999 to more than 404,000 last year.

Chavez defends his record, noting that Venezuela has invested billions in refinery maintenance, is building a new national police force and is starting to make revolutionary changes to "humanize" an overcrowded prison system.

Even in areas where Chavez has targeted spending, results have often been elusive.

For example, the president says he has revolutionized health care by setting up free clinics staffed by Cuban doctors in poor slums across the country. But hospitals have lagged behind, with officials figures showing the number of available hospital beds down from 28,000 beds in 2000 to 22,000 in 2010.

By some accounts, inadequate maternity wards have bumped women in labor from one public hospital to another. Opposition politician Carlos Vecchio posted photos on Twitter showing patients lying on the floor at a hospital emergency room in Maturin.

Despite more health care spending, the government's programs have worsened due to "inefficiency, ineffectiveness and incompetence," said Dr. Carlos Walter, a former health minister and director of the Center of Development Studies of Central University of Venezuela.

In his handling of the economy, Chavez has emphasized a bigger state role, and while he has expropriated businesses from cement plants to retail stores, economists say private investment has suffered.

Even as it battles an 18 percent inflation rate, Venezuela remains perilously reliant on oil, which accounts for 95 percent of its export earnings.

"I think that in the long term, we're headed for a situation of poverty. If oil income starts to run out, if the prices fall too much, there's no productive engine here that can feed us," said Margarita Lopez Maya, a historian at Central University. "But while the price of oil is so high, fantasies can be paid for."

The price of `fantasies'

On the stump, Chavez is good at painting a glowing picture of a Venezuela undergoing nothing short of a nonviolent revolution.

He appears on television inspecting row upon row of new government housing and touts the hope he's given the country's poor. Venezuela has shown a new model is possible, he says, one that breaks from the profit-driven order espoused by the U.S. and its allies.

Chavez recently boasted to reporters: "Today, the model is working."

For many of Chavez's followers, that world is real. They've seen new public health clinics open in their gritty neighborhoods. They know that thousands of people will be able to move into new government housing.

"There's been a vast improvement in the living standards of the vast majority of the country. That's why they've won all those elections," said Mark Weisbrot, an economist and co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington.

Yet one thing Chavez hasn't discussed on the campaign trail is the burden his programs have placed on the country's treasury.

Despite the oil boom, the government has more than tripled its public foreign debt from $24.2 billion when he took office to $88.7 billion in the first quarter of this year. Much of that foreign money has come from China, which has lent Venezuela more than $36 billion.

By contrast, other oil-rich nations such as the United Arab Emirates and Norway have saved billions in investment funds.

"If you look at how much money has come into the country, of course it looks like he hasn't been a very good steward of that money," said David Smilde, a sociology professor at the University of Georgia.

"They've done some good things and they've made some progress, but I don't think they've done anything that's very sustainable. So in that sense, I don't really think it's a successful model that anyone would want to replicate."

Nonetheless, many Venezuelans are still prepared to support Chavez. Conflicting polls showing him either with a double-digit lead or roughly even with Capriles.

Jose Gregorio Oropeza, a vendor who sells cold drinks from a roadside stand, raves about the free health services and the state grocery stores.

"Now that cash comes from oil," Oropeza said. "My economic situation has gotten better in these years of President Chavez."
