$100K Space Prize Goes to Company Making Inflatable Satellite Parts

A company that's developing inflatable satellite components won the $100,000 grand prize in a space business contest Saturday (July 28).

Space Ground Amalgam, LLC took home first place in the 2012 NewSpace Business Plan Competition, which seeks to help startup space firms create potentially game-changing technologies. The Virginia-based company beat out nine other finalists for the NASA-funded prize, which was announced Saturday night at the NewSpace 2012 conference awards gala in Santa Clara, Calif.

Space Ground Amalgam builds inflatable parts ? such as reflectors, booms and solar arrays ? that could decrease satellites' size and weight while helping them meet high bandwidth demands, company officials said.

The firm hopes to help outfit telecommunications satellites, as well as spacecraft run by NASA, the military, industry and academia. Space Ground Amalgam is seeking a total of $3.5 million in funding, officials said.

Nevada-based Digital Solid State Propulsion, LLC, which is working on new "green" solid-state propellants that can be switched on and off using only electrical power, won the $10,000 second prize.

The Texas company Terapio Corporation received an honorable mention for its plan to devise bioengineered therapeutics that could help mitigate the effects of radiation exposure in space or on other worlds.

"All three of the winners provide key disruptive technologies and are outstanding candidates for institutional funding," Thomas Atchison, one of five competition judges and chairman of the Mavericks Civilian Space Foundation, said in a statement.?"These companies, their products, technologies and services will bring down the barriers to commercial activity in space."

The 10 finalists presented their business plans to the NewSpace 2012 conference on Friday (July 27), after polishing them for the previous two days during a "boot camp" run by space industry professionals and investment experts.

This year's prize represents a big monetary step up from last year, when the top award of $25,000 went to Altius Space Machines for its "Sticky Boom" technology, which could make space docking and rendezvous operations easier.

The NewSpace Business Plan Competition will continue trying to nurture promising space startups into the future, officials said.

"This competition is becoming the premier event for finding investment opportunities and deals related to disruptive technologies of the future,"?said competition judge Eva-Jane Lark, vice president of the investment firm BMO Nesbitt Burns in Canada.?"I recommend all institutional and angel investors look to the 2013 NewSpace Business Plan Competition for more innovative technologies to consider."

Food Corner: Wintermelon Drink

Winter melon drink is a healthy & refreshing drink. It is a refreshing thirst quenching drink suit for summer. I used to buy this drink from some Chinese shops who sell herbal drinks. However later I wanted to try it at home.

Here is the recipe & it is so simple.

Ingredients (about 2 glasses)

About 1 inch thick piece of Winter melon (cut across the fruit, as shown)

2 glasses of water

2-3 tspn honey or brown sugar

Wash & remove the skin & seeds of winter melon.

In a pot, mix winter melon, brown sugar & water. If you use honey as a sweetner, use it later.

Bring into boil.

or use slow cooker to boil about 2-3 hrs.

Drain the boiled winter melon drink.

Add honey or more sugar if need as per taste.

(AP) ? On Israeli soil, U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of the Jewish state and said the United States has "a solemn duty and a moral imperative" to block Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability.

"Make no mistake, the ayatollahs in Iran are testing our moral defenses. They want to know who will object and who will look the other way," he said. "We will not look away nor will our country ever look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

The presidential election hovered over the speech, with the Old City forming a made-for-television backdrop behind Romney, while some of his campaign donors listened in the audience.

In his remarks, Romney steered clear of overt criticism of President Barack Obama, even though he has taken on the present administration in the past for not doing enough to prevent Iran from potentially developing nuclear weapons.

The former Massachusetts governor also stepped back from a comment a senior aide made a short while before the speech.

"We recognize Israel's right to defend itself," he told the audience. Earlier, the aide, Dan Senor, previewed the speech for reporters, saying that "if Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability, the governor would respect that decision."

Israel is the second of three stops on an international trip for Romney in the weeks before he claims the Republican nomination at the national convention in Tampa, Fla.

He flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was in keeping with claims made by Israeli governments, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassies in Tel Aviv. He did not say if he would order it moved if he wins the White House.

Even so, his remarks drew a standing ovation from his audience, which included Sheldon Adelson, the American businessman who has said he will donate millions to help elect Romney to the White House.

In his speech, Romney said Syrian President Bashar Assad "desperately clings to power" in Damascus in the face of an attempted overthrow, but he did not call for his removal.

He noted that Egypt is now headed by an "Islamist president, chosen in a Democratic election. ... The international community must use its considerable influence to insure that the new government honors the peace agreement with Israel that was signed by the government of Anwar Sadat" more than three decades ago, he said.

A goal of Romney's overseas trip is to demonstrate his confidence on the world stage, but his stop in Israel also was designed to cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney, according to the poll released Friday.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel, noting statements the president has made about settlements and his handling of evident Iranian attempt to develop nuclear weapons.

Tehran is closer to developing nuclear weapons capability than before, Romney said. "Preventing that outcome must be our highest national security priority."

In an unspoken rebuttal to Obama and other critics, Romney said "It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from security nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war.

"The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers," he said.

In a March speech before a pro-Israel lobby in Washington, Obama warned of "loose talk of war" that serves only to drive up oil prices. "Now is not the time to bluster," he said then. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and sustain the broad international coalition we have built."

It was unlikely that the day's events would settle the issue.

Obama's former press secretary, Robert Gibbs, told ABC's "This Week" that the administration has delayed Iran's nuclear program. The president has imposed U.S. penalties against Iran and worked to tougher strictures applied by other nations. There have been numerous published reports of a coordinated U.S.-Israeli cyberattack that caused damage to Iranian equipment vital to creating weapons-grade nuclear material.

Even so, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said before the speech that "all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota."

Whatever the reality, the administration has taken steps in recent days to reassure Israel of its support.

Most notably, Obama approved an increase in assistance to strengthen a missile defense system that is designed to protect Israel from rocket attacks launched from the Gaza.

Ten Things to Know BEFORE Your Income Tax Audit | Content for ...

Author: Sarah Simmons | Total views: 16 Comments: 0
Word Count: 899 Date:

Being hit with a tax audit can be intimidating, nerve-wracking, and even downright scary - but they don't have to be. When it comes to audits, knowledge is your best asset. Here are some tips everyone should know to avoid an income tax audit, and how to be prepared when one strikes:

1. Know Your Red Flags.

The IRS is a huge organization, and it relies on prioritizing to keep running smoothly. This means that, rather than poring over every case with a fine tooth comb, tax examiners tend to focus harder on "high-risk" cases. Do you keep offshore accounts and trust funds? Did you file multiple tax exemptions? Have you flat-out not filed a tax return? Then be prepared, because an audit is more likely to come your way.

2. Know Your Company.

When it comes to the IRS, the best offense is a good defense. Are you up on financial transactions at your company? Have you analyzed expense reports for legitimacy? Are you aware of which business expense deductions are available to you and your company? Do you have third party options to validate any expenses not covered by a receipt? These are all things to think about - and things you should know about before the IRS does.

3. Know Your Mathematics.

Even the most experienced financier can make a small subtraction slip-up, but few things send up a red flag faster than a major miscalculation. Whether you have your taxes done or do them yourself, get a second opinion from a fresh pair of eyes. A proper report now will save you a lot of trouble later on.

4. Know Your Means.

It's as simple as it sounds. Whenever living large and tax return red flags combine, a tax audit isn't far behind. The IRS can check your yearly income against your living expenses, and use your testimony against you, so make sure you can prove that you've been living within your means.

5. Know Your Deductions.

Deductions are the most precarious part of filing a tax return. Left open to relative subjectivity, frivolous (or downright fraudulent) deductions are the most common method for attempting to cheat the system. Even if your deductions are 100% legitimate, unusually high or extensive items might be enough to raise a red flag for the IRS. Your best line of defense is to document everything: keep your receipts, show your calculation work, and make sure you file the correct forms.

6. Know Your Position.

Taxes can be especially tricky for independent contractors: not only are there extra forms to deal with, but tax auditors may still reclassify you as an employee of a company and attempt to collect unreported payroll taxes (plus penalties and interest). Through effective use of forms and the 20-Factor Test, however, these audit claims can be properly defeated.

7. Know What NOT to Say.

Think you got one over on the IRS with your deft maneuvering? You would do well to keep that information to yourself. The IRS rewards informants with a share of the extra fees (and fines, and penalties, and interest) collected, so don't be surprised if you find yourself hit with an audit. If that interview does come, don't expect glossing over answers over with quick cute excuses to work in your favor toward a shorter audit - those answers could be used against you later as criminal intent toward tax evasion. Choose your words wisely.

8. Know Your Rights.

So, you were chosen for an audit? You will be interviewed, and you will be scrutinized. That said, you are not entirely powerless. According to Section 3503 of the IRS Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998 (RRA 98), you have a right to know why you are being audited. You also have a right to record your interview, ask to transfer your case to another area, and even file a misconduct report if your auditor is acting out of line.

9. Know Your Opponent.

A common mistake among individuals facing an audit is to underestimate the intelligence of their auditor. People like to rib them with names like "bean counter," but rest assured, this is your auditor's career. It took years of intense schooling and experience in accounting and auditing to get to this point, and along with that sort of practice comes an innate savvy for getting that job done. They've dealt with every type of person under the sun. If you haven't, or just aren't sure, your best bet is to get a professional on your side: the tax attorney.

10. Know Your Tax Attorney.

Doing taxes can be a frustrating and confusing process, and even reading these tips may leave you with more questions than answers. That's all right - that's what tax attorneys are for. A good criminal tax attorney will prepare you on a personal level for every possible aspect of a tax audit, and will aggressively fight on your behalf. A good tax attorney knows how to speak an auditor's language, from the right answers to the right time to stay silent. Whether you're trying to navigate a tough audit or simply avoid one in the first place, a good tax attorney can guide you there safely.

Hope Solo Calls Out Brandi Chastain: Shut Up!

Remember that whole Olympic spirit thing? Someone should tell Hope Solo about it.

The U.S. Soccer Team's starting goalie may have been responsible for a shutout against against Colombia yesterday, but the former Dancing with the Stars contestant didn't celebrate much afterward.

She slammed former World Cup hero Brandi Chastain instead.

Brandi Chastain PictureHope Solo Photograph

Displeased with Chastain's analysis as an announcer, specifically her criticism of defender Rachel Buehler, Solo went off on a multiple-part Twitter rant against the retired player:

  • "Its 2 bad we cant have commentators who better represents the team&knows more about the game."
  • "Lay off commentating about defending and gking until you get more educated @brandichastain the game has changed from a decade ago.
  • "I feel bad 4 our fans that have 2 push mute."

Chastain is best known for nailing the World Cup-winning shootout kick against China in 1999. She's played in 192 international teams for her country and did not respond to these taunts.

Solo, meanwhile, is unafraid to speak her mind. Earlier this month, she detailed the significant amount of sex that went on in the Olympic Village four years ago.

HBT: Cordero hasn't made good impression in Houston

Francisco Cordero went from Toronto to Houston as part of last week?s 10-player swap and the Astros, having traded closer Brett Myers and setup man Brandon Lyon, installed Cordero as their new closer.

To absolutely no one?s surprise, it hasn?t worked out very well.

Cordero was terrible for the Blue Jays, throwing 34 innings with a 5.77 ERA and .340 opponents? batting average, and he?s blown saves (and taken losses) in two of his first three appearances for the Astros.

Tuesday against the Reds he came into the game with a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning and went fly out, single, homer, ground out, walk, wild pitch, walk, single. By the time manager Brad Mills removed Cordero from the game it was a 4-2 deficit.

Last night, also against the Reds, he came into the game with a 3-2 lead in the ninth inning and went double, strikeout, walk, strikeout, double. Mills again removed him from the game before the inning was over, this time with a 4-3 deficit.

So though three games Cordero is 0-2 with two blown saves and a 23.14 ERA while allowing opponents to hit .417 with a 1.367 OPS. And the Astros, who have an MLB-worst 34 wins all season, have let a washed-up 37-year-old closer turn back-to-back ninth-inning leads into back-to-back losses.

Greece faces huge hurdles in road to reform

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Inspectors overseeing Greece's faltering financial recovery have returned to Athens to push the country back on the road to painful reform. But as Greece's economic problems pile higher, the task appears insurmountable.

Months of political uncertainty and the spread of the eurozone's crisis to major economies such as Spain and Italy are stacking pressure on Greece's new coalition government to slash spending or face the threat of an exit from the 17-country group that uses the euro.

Greece needs to cut an additional ?11.5 billion ($14 billion) in spending over the next two years to meet deficit targets and is likely to impose more pay cuts through pension and benefit caps. If it doesn't meet the deficit targets, its eurozone partners could decide to stop giving it financial aid, potentially forcing it to drop out of the eurozone.

The heads of an inspection team from the European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund ? collectively known as the "troika" ? arrived this week in Athens to pick apart Greece's deficit-cutting proposals. They will return in September before making their final assessment.

Conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, meanwhile, met Thursday with EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

Greeks had been promised some relief from the severe recession after the country won major debt restructuring and rescue loan deals this year, following another round of salary and benefit cuts. But that prospect has already faded.

Here are some reasons Greece is finding it increasingly difficult to meet its deficit targets.

"GREAT DEPRESSION"

Greece's economy is in its fifth year of recession, during which its economic output has dropped by about a 20 percent. Samaras has likened the period to the Great Depression in the United States in the 1930s.

On Tuesday, he delivered more bad news: The economy would contract a further 7 percent in 2012, far more than the 2.8 percent predicted last year. Unemployment, originally forecast to settle around 18 percent, has reached 24 percent.

A national association representing small businesses said it expects 67,000 more companies to go bankrupt in the next 12 months.

The economic downturn is depriving the government of much-needed revenue with which to lower its deficits.

Some blame the severity of the recession on the bailout creditors' insistence on government spending cuts as a way to lower the deficit.

In the past two years, eurozone members and the IMF have granted Greece two successive rescue loan packages worth ?100 billion ($121 billion) and ?130 billion ($158 billion) ? a higher combined amount than the country's gross domestic product ? but tied it to draconian demands for fiscal reforms to cut overspending.

The main targets include cutting the budget deficit from a runaway 15.8 percent of GDP in 2009 to around 2 percent over five years, while overhauling the public sector and services and market rules, and cutting 150,000 government jobs.

Samaras has promised to halt the recession next year and gradually bring the jobless rate to 10 percent by the end of his four-year term in 2016.

POLITICAL STALEMATE

Samaras may be lucky to still be in power in 2016, however, as political instability keeps undermining efforts to reform the economy and steer it back to health. Samaras' government is the country's fourth in eight months.

The previous three governments achieved little in terms of reform as infighting forced two national elections in May and June.

In a letter of resignation last week, the former head of Greece's key privatization agency said the time spent changing governments meant privatization revenues this year would reach ?300 million ? a tenth of the ?3 billion target.

Cutbacks agreed on under former prime minister Lucas Papademos, a former ECB vice-president who served as Greece's leader for six months until May, have yet to be implemented. Plans to lighten government payrolls by firing some civil servants have stalled.

Samaras managed to eventually form a government after his conservatives sided with the traditional rival Socialists and a small left-wing party.

The power-sharing deal was struck on a pledge to renegotiate the terms of the bailout, arguing that the economy is now too weak to impose any more austerity. Greece wants another two years to meet its targets.

EUROZONE SKEPTICISM

But Greece's rescue creditors are hesitant to give the country more time, saying it has only itself to blame for missing most of its reform targets over the past two years.

"The difficulties that Greece is currently experiencing do not stem from the (EU-IMF) program," senior ECB official Joerg Asmussen said bluntly on a visit to Athens this month. "They stem from many years of unsustainable economic policies and a reluctance to implement the necessary reforms."

EU officials believe that giving Greece the extra time to meet its deficit targets could undermined the overall rescue deal because it would require giving Greece new financial support. Many eurozone nations are increasingly reluctant to hand over more rescue money.

Greece's long list of unfulfilled commitments includes overhauling the tax system, ending delays in privatization and public land usage, scrapping dozens of state agencies, and reforming the health system and backlogged judiciary.

Samaras conceded this week that a renegotiation of Greece's bailout terms was unlikely in the short term, because the country is still in a "weak position" and because of the financial turmoil elsewhere in Europe.

Some investors worry that eurozone countries could give up on Greece and stop giving it rescue loans. Facing default, the country could potentially have to drop out of the euro bloc.

EURO EXIT

The eurozone has no provisions for a member being expelled, but the threat hangs over the country. That creates uncertainty for businesses and scares away foreign investment.

If Greece were to quit the common currency, its new currency would rapidly lose value against the euro. That would cause savings ? converted from euros ? to shrink. The cost of consumer goods ? from food to fuel ? would skyrocket as the country imports most of it.

Greek savers would rush to pull their euros out of banks before the money gets converted into the new, less valuable currency. That could cause bank runs, bringing down the financial system.

It would also deliver a severe blow to the property market, state benefits and salaries, according to predictions by bank researchers and parties backing the government coalition.

The financial catastrophe, they argue, would trigger widespread social unrest, in a country already seething with anger.

PUBLIC UNREST

Public discontent with the government's policies is one key reason why the country is struggling to recover its financial health.

It triggered Greece's political crisis last year after defections from the then-Socialist government forced it to seek partners in a six-month coalition.

Strikes and protests have died down since the start of the crisis, but the political atmosphere has become increasingly hostile.

The impact of the public anger was also evident in the latest general elections. The two parties that dominated politics for four decades, the conservative New Democracy and Socialist PASOK lost more half their support as voters fled to anti-bailout parties that accuse the political establishment of massive corruption and of allowing the country to be humiliated.

Alexis Tsipras, the left-wing opposition leader, has refused to meet with the debt inspectors, arguing their policies are leading the country to ruin.

"Very simply, this program will not work," he told parliament this week. "New cuts will cause an even worse recession in an economy already destroyed."

Gaze-tracking illusion lets you draw with your eyes

People with locked-in syndrome could use their eyes to mimic handwriting or drawing thanks to new gaze-tracking software.

You might think you control your eyes, but really they are constantly making jerky motions known as saccades that allow us to take in the surroundings. Moving your eyes in a smooth, sweeping motion is hard unless you are tracking a moving object, meaning eye-writing systems tend to involve focusing on one of a static list of letters then blinking to select it.

Now neuroscientist Jean Lorenceau at the Pierre-and-Marie-Curie University in Paris, France, has found a way to fool your eyes into making smooth movement by using an optical illusion called "reverse phi motion" ? first discovered in the 1970s ? to create a virtual target.

Phi motion is essentially the effect that turns a series of still photos into a movie, but reverse phi motion is a bit weirder. Take a film of a moving white dot then turn the dot in every other frame black, and the film will appear to run backwards ? that's reverse phi in action.

Lorenceau's system uses a display covered in dots that flick from all-white to all-black. The reverse phi illusion means that moving your eye in any direction while looking at the screen makes it appear as if an on-screen dot is moving in that same direction. A gaze-tracking camera follows the right eye's movements to control a cursor on the screen. After practicing for around 30 minutes on three separate days it is possible to trace your gaze in the shape of numbers, letters or even whole words and drawings. "It's like surfing, you move your eyes to get on the wave and once you're on you just slide with it," he says. "Then you learn to turn right, turn left and make figures."

The ability to trace any shape makes this technique much more flexible than other eye-writing systems, but the trade-off is that users must periodically stop to check what they have written or drawn, as displaying the results in real-time would draw the eye and interfere with the reverse phi effect. "You need to have no ink in the eye pen," explains Lorenceau.

"Using this reverse phi motion effect is really novel," says Howell Istance, who researches gaze control at De Montfort University, Leicester, UK, but he says that existing systems are likely more effective for just entering text. "I could imagine people using this for artistic or creative expression, which is something that you can't do otherwise."

Scientists explore new class of synthetic vaccines

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

In a quest to make safer and more effective vaccines, scientists at the Biodesign Institute? at Arizona State University have turned to a promising field called DNA nanotechnology to make an entirely new class of synthetic vaccines.

In a study published in the journal Nano Letters, Biodesign immunologist Yung Chang joined forces with her colleagues, including DNA nanotechnology innovator Hao Yan, to develop the first vaccine complex that could be delivered safely and effectively by piggybacking onto self-assembled, three-dimensional DNA nanostructures.

"When Hao treated DNA not as a genetic material, but as a scaffolding material, that made me think of possible applications in immunology," said Chang, an associate professor in the School of Life Sciences and a researcher in the Biodesign Institute's Center for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology. "This provided a great opportunity to try to use these DNA scaffolds to make a synthetic vaccine."

"The major concern was: Is it safe? We wanted to mimic the assembly of molecules that can trigger a safe and powerful immune response in the body. As Hao's team has developed a variety of interesting DNA nanostructures during the past few years, we have been collaborating more and more with a goal to further explore some promising human health applications of this technology."

The core multidisciplinary research team members also included: ASU chemistry and biochemistry graduate student and paper first author Xiaowei Liu, visiting professor Yang Xu, chemistry and biochemistry assistant professor Yan Liu, School of Life Sciences undergraduate Craig Clifford and Tao Yu, visiting graduate student from Sichuan University.

Chang points out that vaccines have led to the some of the most effective public health triumphs in all of medicine. The state-of-the-art in vaccine development relies on genetic engineering to assemble immune system stimulating proteins into virus-like particles (VLPs) that mimic the structure of natural viruses---minus the harmful genetic components that cause disease.

DNA nanotechnology, where the molecule of life can be assembled into 2-D and 3-D shapes, has an advantage of being a programmable system that can precisely organize molecules to mimic the actions of natural molecules in the body.

"We wanted to test several different sizes and shapes of DNA nanostructures and attach molecules to them to see if they could trigger an immune response," said Yan, the Milton D. Glick Distinguished Chair in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and researcher in Biodesign's Center for Single Molecule Biophysics. With their biomimicry approach, the vaccine complexes they tested closely resembled natural viral particles in size and shape.

As proof of concept, they tethered onto separate pyramid-shaped and branched DNA structures a model immune stimulating protein called streptavidin (STV) and immune response boosting compound called an adjuvant (CpG oligo-deoxynucletides) to make their synthetic vaccine complexes.

First, the group had to prove that the target cells could gobble the nanostructures up. By attaching a light-emitting tracer molecule to the nanostructures, they found the nanostructures residing comfortably within the appropriate compartment of the cells and stable for several hours----long enough to set in motion an immune cascade.

Next, in a mouse challenge, they targeted the delivery of their vaccine cargo to cells that are first responders in initiating an effective immune response, coordinating interaction of important components, such as: antigen presenting cells, including macrophages, dendritic cells and B cells. After the cargo is internalized in the cell, they are processed and "displayed" on the cell surface to T cells, white blood cells that play a central role in triggering a protective immune response. The T cells, in turn, assist B cells with producing antibodies against a target antigen.

To properly test all variables, they injected: 1) the full vaccine complex 2) STV (antigen) alone 3) the CpG (adjuvant) mixed with STV.

Over the course of 70 days, the group found that mice immunized with the full vaccine complex developed a more robust immune response up to 9-fold higher than the CpG mixed with STV. The pyramid (tetrahedral) shaped structure generated the greatest immune response. Not only was immune response to the vaccine complex specific and effective, but also safe, as the research team showed, using two independent methods, that no immune response triggered from introducing the DNA platform alone.

"We were very pleased," said Chang. "It was so nice to see the results as we predicted. Many times in biology we don't see that."

With the ability to target specific immune cells to generate a response, the team is excited about the prospects of this new platform. They envision applications where they could develop vaccines that require multiple components, or customize their targets to tailor the immune response.

Furthermore, there is the potential to develop targeted therapeutics in a similar manner as some of the new generation of cancer drugs.

Overall, though the field of DNA is still young, the research is advancing at a breakneck pace toward translational science that is making an impact on health care, electronics, and other applications.

While Chang and Yan agree that there is still much room to explore the manipulation and optimization of the nanotechnology, it also holds great promise. "With this proof of concept, the range of antigens that we could use for synthetic vaccine develop is really unlimited," said Chang.

Ruby Sparks- Written by Zoe Kazan and Directed by Valerie Faris ...

It's no surprise that Zoe Kazan who penned the delightful new film Ruby Sparks opening today is a good writer.? Both her parents - Nicholas Kazan and Robin Swicord are also top tier Hollywood screenwriters.? Ruby Sparks is the story of Calvin Weir-Fields (played by Kazan's real life boyfriend Paul Dano) a wunderkind writer whose first novel was a huge sensation and success.? It's been some time and Calvin can't write and has become a depressed recluse caught in a vicious cycle of staring at the typewriter to no effect.? Then one night he dreams of Ruby Sparks and then poof a short time later her clothing starts appearing and then she appears in his house acting like his girlfriend.? Of course, Calvin who is already in therapy for his writer's block, thinks he has finally had the psychotic break he has been dreading. ? But he quickly realizes that he's not completely crazy because other people can also see Ruby.? He then realizes that he can literally make Ruby do anything he wants from speaking French to never leaving his side making her the perfect girlfriend and according to his brother a legend to all men.

It sounds lkind of too cute for its own good but don't be fooled thinking that this is just a cutesy movie.? It is much smarter than that, but does take a much appreciated light handed approach.? It deals with themes that are universal like the pressures of creativity, what happens when you peak too soon, and the ramifications of your dreams coming true in a smart and unexpected way.

The directors Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton bring the same comic sensibility mixed with seriousness that they showed with Little Miss Sunshine and the film really benefits from having real life couple Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan play Calvin and Ruby.??

Auditing Business Performance | UltimosLibros Business ...

At one level that is the relatively simple instrument, requiring the management purchase a key division of business activity and to audit performance in that , area, comparing to previous performance degrees and, ideally, benchmarking versus known best training and performance degrees. The information produced by these audits will be used to recognize unsatisfactory performance in addition to enable measures that they are introduced to bring about improvements.

The business areas that needs to be regularly audited, within any business, whether or not public, private, or maybe not-for-profit, include: External Environment: well established gear and techniques can be purchased and used to scan the external environment for details on issues, situations, and trends that may impact on that strategies and performance capabilities in the organization. The quality of this information, and that interpretations of it, is critical, precisely as it is the foundation stone in the strategic planning exercise that follows. A good audit of techniques, tools, and techniques, and the excellent of output, is critical in ensuring the fact that strategic planning process is provided with high quality, pertinent, valid information.

Challengers: although an portion of the external atmosphere analysis activity, this deserves another mention. Monitoring and-or benchmarking : variations of auditing : of competitor performance is critical. Competitors are, through default, in a similar business, and gaining knowledge of competitor performance degrees, in as several key areas as you possibly can, will bring benefits to any company in any market.

Strategic Planning: often an area of activity which is not evaluated, because doing so is carried out because of the senior executive degrees of management, but needs to be. In addition towards information gathering discussed above, the degree of expertise in strategic planning in the managers, the rationale and justification for any chosen strategies, the processes helpful to communicate the strategies through the entire organization, the degree of support and sources provided for rendering, the performance connected with existing and prior strategies, are all areas that needs to be audited in obtain for optimum performance that they are continuously achieved.

Command: separate from that Strategy audit, the quality of leadership should end up being audited regularly. A set of competencies with regard to leadership, at all levels in the organization, should be used, and the command performance measured versus these. Development activity also needs to be based about these competencies, and on eliminating or reducing weaknesses identified because of the audit.

Culture: the previous culture that mix of beliefs, ideals, perceptions, behavior, that makes up the culture in the organization should end up being regularly audited and compared to the culture that is actually desired by, the objective of, the organization leaders. Particularly at times once the organization is arranging or undergoing key change, information gathered from these audits shall be invaluable.

Financial: wherever, although there could be a framework of supervision and financial accounting techniques, there is a must rigorously and routinely audit the effectiveness of these, to ensure the fact that budgeting and accounting exercise is as productive as you possibly can.

Suppliers: one in the most critical regions of any organization exercise, the start in the supply chain, company performance, including the performance of these in the company who audit company performance, must end up being audited, rigorously in addition to regularly. Now established, in parallel by using research & design and strategic arranging, as one in the foundation stones connected with quality assurance, any weakness within supplier performance damages the organization, oftentimes irreparably. Auditing makes optimum performance degrees are maintained.

Bodily Resources: the quality of and by using physical resources, for example raw materials, functional equipment, technological products and systems, home furniture, fittings, and buildings, all need regular auditing so the most correct resources are obtained, installed, maintained, in addition to used effectively.

Human resources: this entails auditing the quality of human resources utilized by the organization, the way in which they are used, how well they are trained and produced, as well because what opportunities in addition to channels exist with regard to progression. Every aspect of human resources activity should be audited whatsoever levels, from operational around and including executive level.

Equality:
covering diversity, discrimination, and equality of opportunity which might be all key areas that if not audited regularly to make certain high levels of performance not just abiding by legislative requirements but additionally contributing positively towards culture of that organization will bring about conflict, dissatisfaction, lower morale, lower motivation, and ultimately lower levels of efficiency.

Internal Customers: usually ignored, the degree of satisfaction of internal customers another department, individual, or maybe team, that handles another stage of generation or service creation is important. Overwhelming evidence exhibits that dissatisfaction connected with internal customers, resulting in breakdowns in transmission and cooperation, belongs to the major causes of poor efficiency.

Distribution: of the products and-or services provided because of the organization is an indispensable element in making the organization successful. Auditing this process will ensure that logistics best practices come in place, and which distribution activity is actually contributing positively, with regard to financial costs in addition to corporate identity, to marketing, sales, in addition to customer service attempts.

External Customers: auditing the satisfaction levels of external customers is often a critical activity that needs to be carried out over a frequent basis. Customers here include all those at separate points in the distribution chain, to buyers and operators. Information drawn from these audits will ensure that the organization is due to tune with and may respond appropriately towards needs of its most crucial stakeholders its external customers.

Stakeholder Associations: stakeholders are anybody, team, external company, that has a legitimate fascination with the performance in the organization. This may include, depending to the sector and particular organization: employees, unions, mum and dad, relatives, local or maybe national media, local authorities, emergency products, shareholders, financial associations, funding bodies, governors, country?s or international government authorities, strategic partners, and lastly, a variety connected with external customers. Relationships with organizations, in their private way, are essential, and should end up being audited regularly so they are as healthy as you possibly can.

Quality System: deliberately listed because the last area that they are regularly audited, this is an audit that needs to be carried out in addition to all the man or women audits listed over. Whether an company has an externally certificated excellent assurance management system, or an central only system, there needs to be quality criteria set for every critical activity, occurrence, stage, and method, from the starting point to the final point in the supply chain in the earliest stages connected with design and supply activity to the point where the products is in the hands in the final, end-user buyer. Quality criteria which describe required excellent levels, performance degrees, and outputs, are essential to the success of any company. The quality system, including the central and external auditing techniques, should be audited to be sure that it is actually performing as intended which is, assuring that the required quality standards are increasingly being met, and certainly, continuously improving.

Effective auditing will bring several benefits to that organization.
