HBO picks up Dustin Hoffman's 'Luck' for second season (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? The new Dustin Hoffman series "Luck" has been renewed for a second season by HBO, the network said on Tuesday.

The horse-racing drama, which Hoffman stars in and produces, will begin production on its 10-episode second season at the end of February, and will premiere in January 2013. Filming will take place at the Santa Anita Park horse-racing track and various other locations.

"Luck," which is executive-produced by "Deadwood" creator David Milch, Michael Mann and Carolyn Strauss, and co-stars Nick Nolte, has amassed a gross audience of 3.3 million with its first episode, which premiered Sunday following a December preview. The preview drew 1.1 million viewers, with an additional 1.1 million tuning in for the premiere Sunday at 9 p.m. Re-broadcasts at 10 and 11 picked up 711,000 and 420,000 more viewers respectively.

Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming, said of the series, "We couldn't be more thrilled with the critical response to this beautiful piece of work, and we are very excited about where David and Michael plan to take these incredible characters."

Palestinians blame Israel for exploratory talks' (Reuters)

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) ? Palestinian leaders blamed Israel for the failure of exploratory talks aimed at resuming peace negotiations, and said they planned to explore other ways of bringing about a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

The talks ended in Jordan on January 25 without achieving any progress and Palestinian officials said President Mahmoud Abbas planned to consult fellow Arabs on his next move.[ID:nL5E8CP4L1]

"In light of the results of the Amman meetings, the Palestinian leadership holds Israel fully responsible for their failure," the top Palestinian decision-making body, the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), said in a statement Monday.

"These meetings exposed Israel's determination to pursue settlement activity and its rejections of the two-state solution based on the 1967 boundaries," it added in the statement, issued after a meeting in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that peace prospects with the Palestinians looked poor after the Amman talks, at which he said the Palestinians "refused even to discuss Israel's security needs."

The Palestinians want a state in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as its capital. They say Israeli settlements could deny them a viable and contiguous country.

Israel cites biblical and historical ties to the West Bank, an area it calls Judea and Samaria, and says any peace deal must include stringent security arrangements.

CONFIDENCE-BUILDING MEASURES

The Amman talks were proposed last year by the Quartet of international mediators, after the Palestinians decided to seek United Nations membership for the state they have been seeking, saying Israel was not serious about reaching a peace deal.

The United States and the European Union have been pushing Palestinians to continue to talk to Israel. The European Union has sought Israeli confidence-building measures, including freeing some prisoners and expanding areas of Palestinian control in the West Bank.

The Palestinians have said there will be no more talks and they will consult an Arab League follow-up committee on February 4 on what to do next.

Wassel Abu-Youssef, an executive committee member, said the Palestinians decided to hold no more exploratory talks with Israel in order "not to give Netanyahu a chance to deceive the world by claiming that talks were in progress."

The executive committee also decided to step up efforts to achieve reconciliation with the rival Hamas group, an Islamist organization that runs the Gaza Strip and which Israel, the EU and the United States regard as a terrorist group.

"The leadership will work to study a number of political and practical options during the coming days and to continue the political campaign it began on the international arena," said the statement, read by Yasser Abed Rabbo, secretary general of the PLO executive committee.

Previous peace negotiations collapsed in late 2010 with the Palestinians demanding that Israel suspend settlement building in the occupied West Bank, including Arab East Jerusalem.

ABB near $4 billion deal for Thomas & Betts: report (Reuters)

NEW YORK/ZURICH (Reuters) ? Swiss engineering company ABB (ABBN.VX) was near an agreement on Sunday to acquire U.S. manufacturer Thomas & Betts Corp (TNB.N) for about $ 4 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

An agreement could be announced as soon as Monday, although the talks could still fall apart, the paper said on its website, citing the same unnamed sources.

ABB, which makes products used by oil, mining and utility companies, was not immediately available to comment.

Memphis-based Thomas & Betts makes electrical components for industrial companies in the United States, Canada and Europe. It had sales of about $2 billion in 2010 and is scheduled to report its 2011 and fourth-quarter results on Monday, the paper said.

The Zurich-headquartered company has been on a buying spree for the past two years and analysts have kept a close eye on the size of its war chest to see where it might pounce next.

Under the leadership of Chief Executive Joe Hogan, it returned to the M&A market after a lengthy absence, buying industrial motor business Baldor Electric for $4.2 billion in 2010, among other deals.

ABB had net cash of some $1 billion at the end of the third quarter. Acquisitions could potentially add another 3 to 4 percent to its overall growth rate, although in November, Hogan ruled out emptying its war chest for one single target.

Hogan has said ABB still had gaps in the United States and in the market for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) -- small equipment control devices.

In 2011 ABB, which competes with France's Schneider (SCHN.PA) and Germany's Siemens (SIEGn.DE), bought Australian software company Mincom, having in 2010 spent more than $1 billion on U.S. software company Ventyx.

Motorola announces RAZR Developer Edition with unlocked bootloader for Europe, US variant on the way

Promises. You can either let technicalities get in your way of fulfilling them, or you can just find a way to keep them. Motorola, it seems, wants to do the latter. Sorta. In a new blog post, the outfit announced the Motorola RAZR Developer Edition, a fully unlockable version of the handset destined for European shores. The announcement didn't come with a release date, but pointed towards a (currently non-functional) pre-order page for the CM7 hungry. Don't fret, America -- Motorola's thinking of you as well, mentioning that a similar developer device will be available in the United States through MOTODEV, the firm's developer network. Ready to furiously refresh the pre-order page until it goes live? Check out the links below.

Detroit Symphony offering series of free webcasts (AP)

DETROIT ? The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has launched a webcast player that will allow music lovers to enjoy an upcoming performance of Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 4 and other concerts online for free in the comfort of their homes.

People in about 40 countries are expected to view Saturday's high-definition "Live from Orchestra Hall" webcast, and the orchestra expects its webcast series to surpass 30,000 views with this weekend's episode.

The orchestra said the webcast player will make online viewers feel as if they are sitting in Detroit's Orchestra Hall.

The Symphony said it is the only U.S. orchestra to offer a free series of webcasts, which are made possible through contributions from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Ford Motor Co. Fund.

The new viewing environment mimics the interior of Orchestra Hall, giving audiences across the world the same view as local music lovers.

The webcast player also features dimming controls so that viewers at home can control their own version of the house lights.

Audience members now will be able to view a full schedule of upcoming webcasts and add them their online calendars. Viewers also can tweet directly from the webcast player page and follow the feed in the same browser window, allowing audience members to interact with fellow concertgoers while watching the concert at the same time.

The piece being played at any moment will be highlighted on a live repertoire tracker, and live program notes will post below the viewing window with trivia about the piece and the artists.

The "Live From Orchestra Hall" series is one of three new digital initiatives the DSO is introducing this season. Also new to the orchestra's digital repertoire are DSO To Go, a free mobile app, and the Symphony's first downloadable, digital album produced in-house.

Arsenal relies on patched up defense in FA Cup

By STUART CONDIE

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:01 p.m. ET Jan. 27, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Arsenal needs a swift turnaround against Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Sunday to get fans back on side.

For so long a hero to Arsenal fans, manager Arsene Wenger was jeered during last weekend's 2-1 Premier League defeat against Manchester United.

Wenger said he has nothing to prove after leading the Gunners to three Premier League titles but knows the only way to get supporters cheering again is for the team to start picking up positive results.

"I always believe the fans' reaction depends on us," Wenger said Friday. "It is the team which has to get the fans behind them and the fans have to be proud of the team. The vibes have to come from us."

But Wenger will again be relying on a patched up defense against a Villa side that has scored nine goals in its last three away games.

Out of contention for the Premier League title, Arsenal's injury problems mean it has been playing without specialist fullbacks since early December. Now it needs the likes of teenagers Nico Yennaris and Ignasi Miquel to plug the gaps at the back against Villa to prolong its interest in England's premier cup competition.

The 18-year-old Yennaris has started only once for Arsenal and made two more appearances as a substitute but knows how important the FA Cup is.

As an Arsenal fan, Yennaris is steeped in the club's history and watched his team win three of four finals between 2001 and 2005.

And this season's tournament represents arguably the club's best chance of ending a near seven-year streak without a trophy.

"I remember going to those four finals with my dad," Yennaris said. "Some were good, some not so good. The Liverpool one was the first I went to at the Millennium Stadium and we lost that game, Michael Owen scored in the last 10 minutes.

"Then there was Chelsea where Ray Parlour and Freddie Ljungberg scored a couple of screamers, Southampton where Pires scored and then Man United where Vieira scored the winning penalty."

Yennaris made his Premier League debut as a halftime substitute for Johan Djourou in last weekend's 2-1 defeat against Manchester United. With Kieran Gibbs, Andre Santos, Carl Jenkinson and Bacary Sagna all injured, he and the 19-year-old Miguel could be the fullbacks against Villa - even though Yennaris isn't a full-time fullback himself.

"When I came to Arsenal I was actually a striker and then I went to right back," Yennaris said. "Through the ranks I was playing at center back and then in central midfield but I probably wasn't tall enough for center back.

"(But) I'm quite quick. I can move up and down the line quite well so I think I probably am quite suited."

Villa is struggling to make an impression in the Premier League but manager Alex McLeish knows how to beat Arsenal, having led Birmingham to a shock victory over the Gunners in last season's League Cup final.

"We'd like to climb the table as high as we can," McLeish said. "But the magic of the FA Cup dictates you can't leave anything to chance and you have to go and do your utmost to get through to the next round. We have a tough away tie, we know that, but the top clubs have proven this season that they are not unbeatable."

Villa will be without winger Charles N'Zogbia, defender Carlos Cuellar and midfielder Chris Herd, but striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has recovered from illness. Forward Emile Heskey and midfielder Stephen Ireland are also back in contention after recovering from injury.

Also Sunday, Sunderland hosts local rival Middlesbrough.

Liverpool hosts record 11-time FA Cup champion Manchester United in the pick of Saturday's 12 matches, with United missing as many as 11 players because of injury.

Anderson, Tom Cleverley, Ashley Young, Michael Owen, Darren Fletcher and Nemanja Vidic were already out before Rio Ferdinand missed last weekend's win over Arsenal because of a back problem. Phil Jones and Nani were substituted because of injury, while Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra and Michael Carrick also picked up knocks.

"Hopefully we'll have two or three training this morning and we'll be better by tomorrow," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "It is not the best situation for us."

#scio12: The Big Takeaway from the Broadening Participation Panel

Science Online has become my favorite annual conference to attend, by far.? Where else can I be simultaneously surrounded by, tutored, and refreshed by hundreds of folks who are equally geeked about science, technology, outreach, quality education, and social justice and equality as I am? And I love, nay exhilarated by the fact that these comrades are like me, but like me in so many beautiful, complex and different ways.? It warms my heart and feeds my soul. It really does.

I was honored, again, that The Blogfather Bora Z, asked me moderate a session on Broadening Participation of Underrepresented Populations in Online Science Communication & Communities.? There was plenty of discussion and sharing among the participants, which I suppose was near 30 or so (I?m bad a mental math).

Alberto Roca of MinorityPostdoc.org aggregated the notes from the session (which I was typing on the spot).?The?notes include a list of Action Items generated from the discussion. ?It also some video from the session, thanks to Tim Skellet, as well as a Storify summary of? tweets related to the session that occurred both before, during, and after. In fact the tweets continue. Search the hashtags #scio12 #diversity to get the scoop.

The notes give you an idea of the issues we broached.? And truth be told, I believe we could have spent another hour exploring some of the topics more fully.? But there were some very good take home messages, for the people in the room and anyone else in the science, education, and communication worlds that could make the goal of bringing more people into the fold a reality.

1. Regarding blogging, we can each work to create more reader-friendly blog posts.? For example, add more detailed captions for photos.? Some people may be google images and this search activity could bring newer audiences to your blog.? Plus, with more people from urban communities using mobile devices to access the internet, make sure your page is optimized for such viewing.

2. Real life connections still matter, and perhaps more than ever.? Mentoring young scholars ? whether they become scientists/engineers or not is an important if not pivotal piece in the broadening participation jigsaw puzzles.? Plus, it?s important that we maintain real contact with people who may not read blogs very much. We still can be that key resource to them, personally, and their sole connection to science and innovation.

3. The highlight of the session was the incomparable and wise, Dr. Cynthia Coleman (Musings on Native Science). Through her very engaging (and almost hyponotic) story-telling style she eloquently illustrated the imperative of?comprehending cultural norms for different communities.? Many communities such as Native peoples of America have multi-generational traditions for passing on knowledge or us, oral history/story-telling traditions to explain natural phenomena or new discoveries.? And something that really touched the entire audience is that for Native Americans, science isn?t a separate way of knowing.? Science is mbedded/intertwined/enmeshed in everything.? It is a part of the spiritual traditions and rituals of the people. ?And I was heartened to learn that the Ecological Society of America (ESA) is recognizing Traditional Ecological Knowledge or TEK in its programming.? Which opened up the conversation and a member of the USDA Forest Service Eastern Forest & Western Wildland Environmental Threat Assessment Center reached out to members of the audience to partner with communicating with different audiences.

4. Finally, Gabe Lyon of Project Exploration really drove home a very important point: There is NO a single way to access STEM. The metaphor of the pipeline may not be the best because all of our solutions to ?plug up? or fix the ?leaky pipeline? are deficit models.?? We?ve got to work with people, all people where they are and help them find or rather navigate this twisty-turny maze to access STEM.

From this perspective, it gives everyone a chance to work At any point of time any or all of us might be called upon to be a

Map spelling out the way, the rewards, and the potential pitfalls to pursuing STEM;

Beacon shining light on new opportunities to students, blog readers, a family member or neighbor child;

Signpost pointing someone in the right direction for financial aid, academic support, or even social services so that they can stay on course;

Cheerleader who celebrates every victory ? a test passed, a presentation given, a lab project completed ? and who?offers unselfish obnoxious applause to persevere when a student falls short of victory;

Shelter offering students retreat when they encounter pitfalls or nasty antagonists along the way, because surely they will; or an

Ally welding your weapon to slay a dragon too ferocious or leding your strength to build bridges across moats too wide for a student to handle alone.

We?ve all got work to do. What will you do to broaden participation of under-represented communities in science and science communication?

Working too much is correlated with 2-fold increase in likelihood of depression

Thursday, January 26, 2012

The odds of a major depressive episode are more than double for those working 11 or more hours a day compared to those working seven to eight hours a day, according to a report is published in the Jan. 25 issue of the online journal PLoS ONE.

The authors, led by Marianna Virtanen of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and University College London, followed about 2000 middle aged British civil servants and found a robust association between overtime work and depression. This correlation was not affected when the analysis was adjusted for various possible confounders, including socio-demographics, lifestyle, and work-related factors.

There have been a number of previous studies on the subject, with varying results, but the researchers emphasize that it is hard to compare results across these studies because the cut-off for "overtime" work has not been standardized.

"Although occasionally working overtime may have benefits for the individual and society, it is important to recognize that working excessive hours is also associated with an increased risk of major depression", says Dr Virtanen.

European markets firmer, focus on economy, Fed (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? European shares and the single currency held firm on Wednesday as investor focus switched to the broader economic outlook and some strong results from leading U.S. companies, and away from worries about the stalemate in Greek debt talks.

Fresh details on the economic picture are due from Germany, which will release a key business sentiment indicator for January, while the Britain unveils its preliminary estimate of fourth quarter gross domestic product.

Later, the U.S. Federal Reserve ends its first two-day policy meeting of 2012 where it is due to release a new long-term interest-rate projection that could signal an extended period of ultra-low interest rates.

"The risk is the Fed could be more dovish than what the market is expecting, in which case you might see the dollar pull back," Geoff Kendrick, currency strategist at Nomura said.

The recent resilience in global stocks and the euro, despite inconclusive talks over Greece's bailout, combined with the outlook for a prolonged period of low U.S. interest rates, may strengthen downward pressure on the dollar.

"Europe remains a concern every day, but for today the focus is on the FOMC," Junya Tanase, chief currency strategist at JPMorgan Chase in Tokyo said.

The euro was steady at around $1.3030, off a three-week high of $1.3063 hit on Tuesday. The dollar index (.DXY), which measures the currency against six other key currencies, hovered near a three-week low just below 80.

The euro extended gains versus a broadly weaker yen to hit a one-month high after Japan reported its first trade deficit in over 30 years, which prompted investors to pare back on long positions in the Japanese currency.

Greek debt restructuring talks, which have dominated market sentiment all week, are at an impasse as private creditors consider their next step. Euro zone finance ministers have rejected the bondholders' offer to write down the nominal value of their debt by 50 percent in return for new longer-term bonds paying an interest rate of 4 percent.

The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 (.FTEU3) index of top shares was barely changed in early trading at around 1,045.02 points as weakness in European technology stocks offset gains in financial shares.

Shares in mobile telecoms network gear maker Ericsson (ERICb.ST) sank after it reported fourth quarter earnings well below forecast and provided a gloomy outlook on 2012.

A big rally in Japanese financial stocks and in Australia helped lift the MSCI world equity index by around 0.3 percent to 315.80.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Moments after the final buzzer sounded on the Los Angeles Lakers' latest extravaganza of hard fouls, trash-talk and outright wrestling matches with the Los Angeles Clippers, Pau Gasol might have topped it all when he patted Chris Paul on the head.

Anybody who still believes the Staples Center's co-tenants don't have a rivalry should get his own head checked.

The Lakers' 96-91 victory Wednesday night is only going to heat up the simmering campaign for city supremacy.

Kobe Bryant scored 12 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, and Gasol had 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Lakers rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit for their first win this season in the cross-hallway rivalry. The game featured plenty of sharp play, including several moments of brilliance from Bryant and Blake Griffin, but also six technical fouls, plenty of extracurricular talk, and the ejection of the Lakers' Josh McRoberts for scrapping with Reggie Evans.

That's all before Gasol's postgame gesture prompted a furious response from Paul, who had four points and 12 assists for the Clippers in his return from a five-game absence because of a strained left hamstring.

"He touched the top of my head, and I didn't like that," said Paul, who nearly landed with the Lakers last month before the NBA squelched the deal. "You know what I mean. I don't know if Pau's got kids, but don't touch my head like I'm one of your kids. I don't know what his intentions were, like, 'I'll treat him like little Chris.' I don't know if he's got kids, but I'm not one of them."

Gasol, who has no kids, insisted he was misunderstood.

"I'm sorry he felt that way," the Spanish 7-footer said. "I do that all the time with my teammates. Nothing mean about it."

When asked what Paul yelled at him after the game, Gasol called it "just trash."

Andrew Bynum scored 19 points as the Lakers snapped their three-game skid and finally answered the Clippers, who beat the Lakers twice in the preseason and again earlier this month, staking an early claim to L.A. superiority with their revamped lineup. The Lakers aren't ready to cede the city just yet ? in fact, they were willing to fight for it.

"Everybody played with the right attitude, and guys did what they do best," Bryant said. "They had the right temperament. Everybody did what we do best."

Bryant put the Lakers in front with six points during an 11-4 run capped by Metta World Peace's 3-pointer with 3:30 to play. The Lakers nursed the lead into the final minute, when Bynum made a layup and blocked DeAndre Jordan's shot in the paint on consecutive possessions, essentially sealing the Lakers' ninth straight "home" victory in the rivalry.

Griffin had 26 points and nine rebounds, and Caron Butler and Mo Williams added 16 points apiece for the Clippers, who led for all but the opening basket of the first 3? quarters.

The testiness ratcheted up when Griffin and World Peace went down in a heap as they chased a loose ball at midcourt in the third quarter. Both teams surrounded the tangle of limbs and exchanged minor contact, but officials only ruled a jump ball.

"It was chippy out there because we both want to win and we both need to win," Griffin said. "I think they know what we're going to bring every time and we know what they're going to bring. So both teams are going to be ready, but we're not sitting here trying to call it a rivalry or anything like that. It's another game on our schedule."

The Lakers have won 10 of their last 11 home games since Christmas, and the Clippers still haven't beaten the Lakers twice in a row since the 2006-07 season. The Lakers still failed to score 100 points for the 12th straight game, matching their longest low-scoring stretch since early 2004.

Paul hadn't played since the Clippers' home victory over the Lakers 11 days ago, but his teammates stayed in first place in the Pacific Division during his absence.

"It felt great. That's the only good thing I can take from this game, that my leg felt progress," Paul said. "It was so great to get back out on that court. I just wish I could have helped my team out more than I did."

Griffin landed his nightly jaw-dropping dunk when he drove past Gasol on the perimeter and floated past Bynum for a double-clutch jam. Later, Griffin made a nimble reverse hook shot and a flying rebound putback dunk within a minute of each other.

The Lakers got unlikely offensive help from Andrew Goudelock, the rookie from College of Charleston who had scored just 10 points all season before matching that total midway through the second quarter against the Clippers. Goudelock hit two 3-pointers and didn't miss a shot until the third quarter.

Bryant committed six turnovers in the third quarter as the Clippers maintained their lead, and Mo Williams added the tension with a flagrant foul on Goudelock during a fast break early in the fourth. The officials attempted to keep peace with technical fouls ? including two quick ones to McRoberts, who was ejected with 9:35 to play after two exchanges with Evans.

Chauncey Billups committed a technical foul during the Lakers' run to an 87-82 lead on World Peace's sixth 3-pointer in 38 tries during his dismal offensive season.

NOTES: Before the game, the Lakers sent second-year forward Derrick Caracter to Bakersfield of the D-League as he continues his rehabilitation from a torn meniscus in his left knee. ... Fans near courtside included David Beckham, Aziz Ansari, Jerry Bruckheimer, Mark McGrath and director McG.

Archaeopteryx: Birdlike dinosaur wore black plumage of feathers

Archaeopteryx?lived about 150 million years ago in what is now Bavaria in Germany. First unearthed 150 years ago, the fossil of this carnivore, with its blend of avian and reptilian features, seemed an iconic evolutionary link between dinosaurs and birds.

The raven-size creature long thought of as the earliest bird,?Archaeopteryx, may have been adorned with black feathers, researchers have found.

The structures that held the black pigment may have strengthened wing feathers, perhaps helping?Archaeopteryx?fly, scientists added.

Archaeopteryx?lived about 150 million years ago in what is now Bavaria in Germany. First unearthed 150 years ago, the fossil of this carnivore, with its blend of avian and reptilian features, seemed an iconic evolutionary link between dinosaurs and birds.

One recent study has called into question whether?Archaeopteryx?was a true bird?or just one of many birdlike dinosaurs. To learn more about whether birds and birdlike dinosaurs might have evolved flight, and if so, why, researchers often turn to the animals' feathers. Illustrations of the creature are often colorful, but such depictions of its plumage until now had little else but artistic license to draw on.

"Being able to?reconstruct the colors of feathers?can help us gain more knowledge about the organisms and more responsibly reconstruct what they looked like," researcher Ryan Carney, an evolutionary biologist at Brown University, told LiveScience.

Black feathers

An international team of scientists now finds that a well-preserved feather on?Archaeopteryx's wing was black. The color-generating structures within the creature's feather, known as?melanosomes, "would have given the feathers additional structural support," Carney said. "This would have been advantageous during this early evolutionary stage of dinosaur flight." [Images: Dinosaurs That Learned to Fly]

The?Archaeopteryx?feather was discovered in a limestone deposit in Germany in 1861. After two unsuccessful attempts to pinpoint any melanosomes within the feather, the investigators tried a more powerful type of scanning electron microscope.

"The third time was the charm, and we finally found the keys to unlocking the feather's original color, hidden in the rock for the past 150 million years," Carney said.

The group located patches of hundreds of melanosomes encased within the fossil. The sausage-shape melanosomes were about 1 millionth of a meter long and 250 billionths of a meter wide ? that is, about one-hundredth the diameter of a human hair in length and less than a wavelength of visible light in width. To determine the color of these melanosomes, researchers compared the fossilized structures with those found in 87 species of?living birds?that represented four classes of feathers ? black, gray, brown and ones found in?penguins, which have unusually large melanosomes compared with other birds.

"What we found was that the feather was predicted to be black with 95 percent certainty," Carney said.

Did?Archaeopteryx?fly?

To better pin down the structure of the feather, they analyzed its barbules ? tiny, riblike appendages that overlap and interlock like zippers to give a feather rigidity and strength. The barbules and the way melanosomes are lined up within them are identical to those found in modern birds, Carney said.

This analysis revealed the feather is a covert, one that covers the primary wing feathers that birds use in flight. Its feather structure is identical to that of living birds, suggesting "that completely modern bird feathers evolved as early as 150 million years ago," Carney said.

Color may serve many functions in modern birds, and it remains unclear what use or uses this pigment had in?Archaeopteryx. Black feathers may have helped the creature absorb sunlight for heat, acted as camouflage, served in?courtship displays?or assisted with flight.

"We can't say it's proof that?Archaeopteryx?was a flier, but what we can say is that in modern bird feathers, these melanosomes provide additional strength and resistance to abrasion from flight, which is why wing feathers and their tips are the most likely areas to be pigmented," Carney said. "With?Archaeopteryx, as with birds today, the melanosomes we found would have provided similar structural advantages, regardless of whether the pigmentation initially evolved for another purpose."

More feathers will need to be tested across?Archaeopteryx?to see how the animal was colored overall, researchers said. Unfortunately, this is the only?Archaeopteryx?feather discovered with the kind of residues one can test for color.

Still, this one feather is enough to leave an indelible mark on Carney. "I got a tattoo of the feather on the 150th anniversary that?Archaeopteryx's scientific name was published," he said.

The scientists detailed their findings online today (Jan. 24) in the journal Nature Communications. Their work was funded by the National Geographic Society and the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

Home buying could soon beat renting

By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

?

Falling home prices have sent many would-be buyers to the sidelines. If all goes well, record low interest rates and rising rents may soon prompt some of them to take a second look at buying.

Unfortunately, that's a big "if," according to Paul Diggle, a housing economist at Capital Economics.

Much of the decision to buy a house still depends on your personal finances and preferences, your career or family life, or level of financial security.

But if you?re comparing just the cost of owning and renting, buying a house may soon be the better choice, according to Diggle.

Until recently, home ownership was no bargain compared to renting, according to his analysis. ?A 33 percent drop fall in home prices, a plunge in mortgage rates and 15 percent rise in rents since the housing crash has evened the scales. Today, the median monthly mortgage payment of about $700 has fallen to about the level of a median monthly rent check. If mortgage rates keep falling and rents keep rising, the equation will tip even further toward owning.

But that analysis doesn?t include the total cost of owning versus renting. A full accounting includes ?closing costs, maintenance, insurance and property taxes, tax savings from mortgage deductions, gains or losses from home equity, among other factors. Renters have to think about broker fees and future rent hikes. Both have to make assumptions about future trends in housing prices and rents.

When you take those factors into account ? which Diggle has done with a homegrown ?calculator? ? someone who plans on staying put for seven years would come out ahead by about $9,000 if they bought a median-priced home rather than being a tenant in a median-priced rental. Diggle?s calculation assumes that rents keep rising by about 3 percent a year and that house prices stay flat in 2012 and 2013 and begin rising in 2014 at about 3 percent a year.

If house prices fall further, all bets are off, said Diggle. In that case, the renters come out ahead.

?At the moment, (that) downside scenario is more likely to materialize than the upside one,? he said.

Even if Diggle's calculator were to signal a ?strong buy? for home ownership, he doesn?t expect that would spark a buyers' stampede. Most first-time buyers or households who lost a? home to foreclosure don?t have the 20 percent down payment many lenders are insisting on. They may also have trouble getting a mortgage without a credit score of 700 or more ? a higher bar than the 650 score that was the norm for the past two decades.

?A large share of the population has dropped out of the pool of potential buyers,? he said. ?Given that the choice between owning and renting a home is a luxury than many Americans simply do not have, the fact that this does appear to be the time to buy will have only a minimal effect on actual sales. Accordingly, we expect only a modest housing recovery over the next few years."

When would you consider buying a house?

CSX posts higher 4Q profit and revenue (AP)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ? Freight railroad operator CSX Corp. said Monday that fourth-quarter profit rose 6 percent as higher rates offset a decline in the volume of goods it shipped.

The company also announced it had replaced its chief operating officer.

CSX shares fell in after-hours trading.

CSX said Chief Financial Officer Oscar Munoz would become chief operating officer, replacing David A. Brown, who is "no longer with the company." CSX said the change was unrelated to the company's business or financial performance.

Fredrik J. Eliasson, a 16-year CSX veteran, will take Munoz's spot as CFO. He was vice president of sales and marketing for CSX's chemicals and fertilizer business.

CSX net income in the quarter ended Dec. 30 rose to $457 million, or 43 cents per share, from $430 million, or 38 cents per share, a year earlier.

Analysts expected 44 cents per share, according to a survey by research firm FactSet.

The railroad shipped less coal, chemicals and agricultural products than it did a year ago. Overall volume was down 4 percent. CSX said it shipped less coal because utilities needed less of it to generate electricity. Some utilities are using more natural gas to run generators, because its price is close to a 10-year low.

CSX carried more cars and automotive components in the quarter, as North American production picked up from a year ago. Volume of some construction materials ? such as crushed stone and sand ? was also higher, helped by mild winter weather that extended the building season in many parts of the country.

Revenue per shipping unit jumped 9 percent ? led by double-digit increases for hauling coal and autos. That helped the company boost revenue to $2.95 billion, compared with $2.82 billion a year earlier. Analysts expected $2.99 billion.

Economists follow the performance of railroads as one indicator of the strength of the broader economy. That's because railroads haul a wide range of things, from consumer goods to cars and commodities like coal and grain.

The report wasn't as ringing as last week's numbers from bigger rival Union Pacific Corp., which said fourth-quarter net income jumped 24 percent. UP raised prices and hauled more freight during the quarter.

CSX officials planned to discuss the results in a conference call with analysts on Tuesday.

The shares fell 13 cents to close at $22.69 before the results were posted. In after-hours trading, they dropped 62 cents, or 2.7 percent, to $22.07.

Factbox: Etta James (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Three-time Grammy winner Singer Etta James, a pioneer of 1950s rhythm-and-blues and rock music known for her show-stopping hit "At Last," died on Friday at the age of 73.

Following are some keys facts about James.

* James died on Friday, January 20., due to complications from leukemia, according to her longtime manager and friend Lupe De Leon. Her live-in doctor said in December she was terminally ill. She had been in failing health for a number of years and also suffered from diabetes, kidney problems and dementia.

* Her hit songs included "The Wallflower," which originally was titled "Roll With Me Henry," "At Last," "All I Could Do Was Cry," "Something's Got a Hold on Me," "Tell Mama," "I'd Rather Go Blind" and "Stop the Wedding."

* James was born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles January 25, 1938, to a 14-year-old girl in Los Angeles. Over the years, her mother mentioned several different men as her father, including Rudolph Wanderone, the legendary pool hustler best known as Minnesota Fats. James came to think of Wanderone as her father and sought him out at a Nashville, Tennessee, hotel in 1987. She was unable to confirm he was her father but told an interviewer, "When he passed, he sent me a beautiful golden watch that hung on his clothes that had his name on it. And he sent me a letter and told me that he wanted me to write a song about him and stuff."

* James was an influence on performers such as Tina Turner, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Ross and Janis Joplin. She also toured as an opening act with the Rolling Stones and performed with the Grateful Dead.

* James fought a long battle with heroin addiction. In her autobiography, "Rage to Survive," she wrote that at one point she and an accomplice stole the musical instruments of her own band and pawned them in order to buy drugs. After stints in rehabilitation programs, she broke the habit at age 50.

* James' weight reached an estimated 400 pounds at one point and she often had to perform sitting down. She lost some 200 pounds after gastric bypass surgery about 10 years ago.

* James was survived by her husband, Artis Mills, two sons Donto and Sametto and four grandchildren.

What You Missed While Not Watching the Last South Carolina GOP Debate (Time.com)

0 minutes. The CNN spaceship is set to launch, with blue gels on the lights that give the auditorium an alien aquarium vibe. It's the 17th GOP debate of 2012 cycle. Roll the intro montage: "Welcome to the South, the heart of the Republican Party," says the hokey disembodied voice, doing his best imitation of a Stephen Colbert send up, "where tradition lives and values matter." What? Do Iowa and New Hampshire not care about tradition and values? Nonsense. But we push on. We are veterans. We have learned to let the silly slide.

2 minutes. Each candidate gets a shout out. Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is "the frontrunner." Texas Rep. Ron Paul is "the insurgent." Rick Santorum has "renewed momentum," though recent polls show it is in the wrong direction. Newt Gingrich is "on the rise." Then each of the men take the stage with their variation of a high school dweeb strut. Romney is third, and the most talkative. "Hi guys," he says to the others. "Newt," he says shaking Gingrich's hand. "Ha ha," he says, because perhaps it is funny to be shaking Gingrich's hand. "And then there were four," he adds, because that is all that remain. (See "What You Missed While Not Watching the Final Iowa Debate.")

5 minutes. CNN pomp is unending, as usual. After Twitter and Facebook mentions, some military cadets sing the national anthem. The crowd turns to a flat-screen projection of Old Glory. "That was fabulous. Absolutely fabulous," CNN host John King says afterward. One day the debate will start. Then he asks the candidates to make short opening statements. For those who speak Republican, this means brag about your brood.

7 minutes. Santorum begins, noting his "wife Karen and our seven children." He also thanks Iowa "for a little delayed but most welcome victory there." Romney beats Santorum, not in Iowa, but in brood count. "I'm married now 42 years. I have five sons, five daughters-in-law, 16 grandkids, and they're the joy of my life." The married-a-long-time thing is a knock on thrice-married Gingrich, though Romney would probably swear to his grave that this is not true. Gingrich eschews brood stats for geographic pandering. "As a Georgian, it feels good to be back at home in the South," he says. Paul mentions that he has been elected to Congress 12 times, 30 years as an obstetrician, and "I'm the only U.S. veteran on this stage tonight." (See "What You Missed While Not Watching the GOP National-Security Debate.")

9 minutes. Finally a question, and it's a doozy. Would Gingrich like to respond to his second wife's claim that he wanted an open marriage more than a decade ago? "No, but I will," he says, looking ornery. The crowd likes his attitude. "I am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate on a topic like that." The crowd is on its feet applauding. "To take an ex-wife and make it two days before the primary a significant question for a presidential campaign is as close to despicable as anything I can imagine." The place is going nuts. Gingrich goes on for a while. Then he adds, as if it no longer matters, "The story is false."

11 minutes. Gingrich is still going. "I am tired of the elite media protecting Barack Obama by attacking Republicans." A second standing ovation. If being President only required an ability to rile the public into rage against the press, America wouldn't need an election. There would be a coronation.

12 minutes. King asks Santorum if this open marriage/mistress stuff is an issue. Santorum says yes, as softly as he can. "These are issues of our lives and what we did in our lives," he says. "They are issues of character for people to consider."

13 minutes. Romney won't go there. "John, let's get on to the real issues is all I've got to say." The crowd likes that too.

14 minutes. Paul uses his turn at the Gingrich mistress plate to say media corporations are bad. "What about the corporations that run the media?" he asks, before joining in the media's attack by adding apropos of nothing in particular that he has been married 54 years.

15 minutes. New topic. Unemployment. Name three things you would do to help reduce it. Paul says "sound currency," less regulations and near-zero income taxes. Gingrich says repeal Dodd-Frank, increase domestic oil and gas exploration, and radically overhaul the Corps of Engineers.

18 minutes. King follows up by asking Gingrich to attack Romney for his work at Bain Capital. Gingrich indulges, describing "Bain Capital's model, which was to take over a company and dramatically leverage it, leave it with a great deal of debt, made it less likely to survive."

19 minutes. Romney is asked to respond, and attacks Obama. "You've got to stop the spread of crony capitalism. He gives General Motors to the UAW. He takes $500 million and sticks it into Solyndra. He -- he stacks the labor stooges on the NLRB so they can say no to Boeing and take care of their friends in the labor movement," he says. The crowd rewards the Obama bashing with applause.

20 minutes. King persists on Bain, asking Romney to explain how he comes up with the figure of 120,000 jobs created at the firm. Romney says that is what four companies he started now employ. "I'm someone who believes in free enterprise," he continues. "I think Adam Smith was right. And I'm going to stand and defend capitalism across this country, throughout this campaign." Then he turns it up a notch. "I know we're going to get hit hard from President Obama, but we're going to stuff it down his throat and point out it is capitalism and freedom that makes America strong." The foie gras attack.

22 minutes. Santorum distinguishes between regular capitalism and the "high finance" of Romney. "We need a party that just doesn't talk about high finance and cutting corporate taxes or cutting the top tax rates," Santorum says. "We need to talk about how we're going to put men and women in this country, who built this country, back to work in this country in the manufacturing sector of our economy." He's the Joe Biden of the GOP. Pure Scranton.

24 minutes. Talk about the challenges faced by returning military veterans. Everyone on stage is concerned. Paul says he worries about the high rate of suicide. Santorum says there should be job preferences. Romney says he wants the states to do much of the work. Gingrich says cut taxes and help veterans with a program like the G.I. Bill after World War II.

31 minutes. Question on ObamaCare. Romney says repeal it and replace it with something "like a market, a consumer market, as opposed to have it run like Amtrak and the post office." This is not an accurate description of how ObamaCare works, but let it slide. Move on. Gingrich says he'd "repeal all of it because I so deeply distrust the congressional staffs that I would not want them to be able to pick and choose which things they cut." By this logic, congressional staff would never get to do any legislating. But let it slide. Move on. (See "What You Missed While Not Watching the CNBC 'Oops' Republican Debate.")

35 minutes. Santorum uses this opportunity to attack both Romney and Gingrich for once supporting the individual mandate in ObamaCare. He calls Romney's health reforms in Massachusetts "an abject disaster." Romney objects. "First of all, the system in my state is not a government-run system," he says. This is true, but it is kind of funny to hear Romney say it, since he just mischaracterized ObamaCare as a "government-run system." Let it slide. Move on.

39 minutes. They go back and forth for a while, covering old ground. At one point, Romney does another "Ha ha," to express condescension at the attacks on him. When it comes around to Gingrich, he changes the subject by saying, again, that he wants 3-hour debates with Obama. "I will let him use a teleprompter. I would just rely on knowledge. We'll do fine." A real crowd-pleaser that Gingrich.

42 minutes. After more needling from Santorum, Gingrich admits he was wrong about the individual mandate.

43 minutes. Paul finally gets a chance to talk again. He says government should not be involved in medicine. Then he pivots to a discussion about why U.S. military bases overseas are bad, as are recent military adventures.

45 minutes. That brings us to the first break. Before cutting to commercial, King says Gingrich has released his tax returns while the candidates have been on stage. Nice trick. Can we expect gimics like this in future debates?

49 minutes. We're back. King promptly gets Gingrich and Santorum fighting again. "Grandiosity has never been a problem with Newt Gingrich," Santorum says. "I don't want a nominee that I have to worry about going out and looking at the paper the next day and worrying about what he's going to say next." That is a line taken almost word-for-word from the Romney campaign. Then Santorum says he finished ahead of Gingrich in New Hampshire, which is not true. Gingrich got 49 more votes. Nonetheless, Santorum accuses Gingrich of having "not cogent thoughts."

53 minutes. Gingrich responds by listing pretty much everything good that happened during his two decade run in the U.S. House. Then he says, "I think grandiose thoughts. This is a grandiose country of big people doing big things." Applause of course. More tit for tat follows. But no more fancy words like grandiose.

56 minutes. Romney tries to chime in by saying that this squabbling just shows he's the outsider who can fix Washington. But Romney does it really awkwardly, describing himself as someone "who's lived in the real streets of America." Not clear if he is referring to the old family mansion in Belmont, Mass., or the beach house in La Jolla, Calif., or the Deer Valley, Utah, lodge he once owned. Or maybe another "real street" he has yet to disclose. In the middle of the answer, Romney gets lost. Then he finds his way, and attacks Gingrich for not really having as much to do with Ronald Reagan as he claims. "You're mentioned once in Ronald Reagan's diary," Romney says.

58 minutes. Gingrich shoots back. "You did very well under the rules that we created to make it easier for entrepreneurs to go out and do things," he says to Romney. "I don't recall a single day saying, 'Oh, thank heavens Washington is there for me,'" Romney responds.

59 minutes. Question for Paul. Will he release his tax returns? "I'd probably be embarrassed to put my financial statement up against their income," he jokes of the others on the stage.

60 minutes. Romney cleans up his big mistake from the last debate, and says he will release his tax returns in April. Then, as he always does when uncomfortable, he attacks Obama. "You've got a President who's played 90 rounds of golf while there are 25 million Americans out of work," Romney says.

63 minutes. Santorum says he will release his returns as soon as he gets home and prints them off his computer.

64 minutes. King asks Romney if he will release 12 years of his tax returns, like his father George Romney did when he ran in 1968. Romney smiles at the mention of his father, but doesn't answer the question. "Maybe," he says, as the crowd starts to boo. "You know, I don't know how many years I'll release."

66 minutes. King asks a question premised on the fact that the best example of American corporate success at the moment, Apple Inc., has 500,000 employees in China and much fewer in the United States. This allows Santorum to get another Joe Biden riff going about revitalizing American manufacturing. Paul sees the question as an opportunity to deliver an economics lesson on the benefits of trade. Then Paul and Santorum bicker about Santorum's one-time aversion to a national right-to-work bill.

71 minutes. King asks a question about the recent bills in Congress that would put new restrictions on websites to protect intellectual property. He also discloses that CNN's parent company, Time Warner, which is also TIME's parent company, is a big supporter of these bills. The mention of the corporate monster responsible for The Hangover II and Harry Potter VII earns lots of boos from the crowd. "You're asking a conservative about the economic interests of Hollywood," Gingrich jokes. Bottom line, Romney, Gingrich and Paul are against the bills. Santorum is against the bills as well, but more eager to find some new rules to further protect intellectual property. "Where in America does it say that anything goes?" Santorum asks. There are some places, but Santorum has probably never been to them.

76 minutes. Break number two. Say what you want about the evils of Time Warner, but at least it allows CNN to go light on the commercial breaks.

78 minutes. We're back. No we're not. Another commercial break. Ignore the corporate backscratching at minute 76. Another movie made by Time Warner: Cats and Dogs -- The Revenge of Kitty Galore.

81 minutes. Back for real this time. The candidates are asked for one thing they would do over in the campaign. Gingrich says he would skip the first three months of the campaign when he "hired regular consultants and tried to figure how to be a normal candidate." Romney jokes that he would "get 25 more votes in Iowa." That's funny. Then Romney adds, "I guess I also would go back and take every moment I spent talking about one of the guys on the stage and spend that time talking about Barack Obama." This is disingenuous, but on message, and thus an apt summary of Romney's apparent strength and weakness. (As Romney says it, his campaign is blitzing reporters with more anti-Gingrich agitprop by e-mail.) Paul and Santorum can't think of anything they would do differently.

84 minutes. Immigration time. Same as before. Build a fence. Etc. Just look through previous "What You Missed" summaries to get the idea.

95 minutes. Abortion time. Gingrich attacks Romney for changing his mind on the issue. "Governor Romney has said that he had a experience in a lab and became pro-life, and I accept that," Gingrich says. Experience in a lab. Priceless. Then Gingrich says that Romney still appointed pro-choice judges, and still allowed for Planned Parenthood to benefit from his state health reforms. Santorum piles on, saying the country needs a pro-life crusader, not just a pro-life politician. It's like a tag team. At one point Gingrich even says, "I'll yield to Senator Santorum." Romney defends himself by pointing out that he had little choice, given the state he was in, and says he really is pro-life.

103 minutes. Paul finally gets a chance to speak again. He gets into a spat with Santorum about his own pro-life record. Paul calls abortion "a violent act" that should be handled by state, not federal, law; Santorum disagrees. At one point, Paul says to Santorum, "You are overly sensitive."

107 minutes. Final break.

111 minutes. We're back. King asks for closing arguments. Paul talks about liberty. Gingrich talks about certain doom if Obama is reelected, and suggests he is the only person who can defeat Obama. Sex poses surprisingly low risk to heart patients (AP)

CHICAGO ? Good news: Sex is safe for most heart patients. If you're healthy enough to walk up two flights of stairs without chest pain or gasping for breath, you can have a love life.

That advice from a leading doctors' group on Thursday addresses one of the most pressing, least discussed issues facing survivors of heart attacks and other heart patients.

In its first science-based recommendations on the subject, the American Heart Association says having sex only slightly raises the chance for a heart attack. And that's true for people with and without heart disease.

Surprisingly, despite the higher risk for a heart patient to have a second attack, there's no evidence that they have more sex-related heart attacks than people without cardiac disease.

Many heart patients don't think twice about climbing stairs, yet many worry that sexual activity will cause another heart attack, or even sudden death, said Dr. Glenn Levine, lead author of a report detailing the recommendations and a professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

The report says sex is something doctors should bring up with all heart patients. Yet few do because they're uncomfortable talking about it or they lack information, Levine said. The new guidance is designed to fill that gap.

Heart patients should get a doctor's OK before engaging in sexual activity. Many may be advised first to do cardiac rehab ? exercise while being monitored for heart symptoms, to improve heart strength and increase physical fitness. But the heart association says most eventually will be cleared to resume sexual activity.

The doctors' group offers advice for heart patients based on scientific research involving sometimes provocative sex-related topics:

_Who's most at risk for sudden death related to sex? Married men having affairs, often with younger women in unfamiliar settings. Those circumstances can add to stress that may increase the risks, evidence from a handful of studies suggests.

_Sex may be OK as soon as one week after a relatively mild heart attack, if patients can walk up a few flights of stairs without discomfort.

_Viagra and other drugs for erectile dysfunction are generally safe for men with stable heart disease.

"The risk of having a heart attack during sexual activity is two to three times higher than when not having sexual activity. However, this increased risk of heart attack during sexual activity represents only a very small part of a person's overall risk of having a heart attack, and sexual activity is the cause of less than 1 percent of all heart attacks," Levine said.

Among heart attack survivors, average risks for another heart attack or sudden death are about 10 in 1 million per hour; having sex increases that to about 20 to 30 in 1 million per hour of sexual activity, the new report says. People without heart disease face lower overall risks for a heart attack, but similar risks for a sex-related attack.

The updated advice was released online Thursday in the heart association journal, Circulation.

Dr. Keith Churchwell, chief medical officer of Vanderbilt University's Heart and Vascular Institute, said the guidance is important for patients, and that questions about sex are the most common ones he hears from heart patients.

Ohio State University heart specialist Martha Gulati praised the recommendations for emphasizing that sexual counseling is important not just for patients but also their partners, who she says are often just as nervous about resuming sexual activity.

Day-care operator Tammy Collins of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, one of Gulati's patients, says the advice is reassuring.

She had a heart attack last year on Sept. 11, during a trip to Cincinnati to celebrate her wedding anniversary.

Collins' mother died of a heart attack at the same age, on her 51st birthday. With high blood pressure and high cholesterol, Collins knew she was at risk. She developed symptoms a few hours after having sex. She dismissed it at first, until she felt a sharp pain in her upper back and had trouble breathing. She was rushed to the hospital and doctors used stents to open blocked arteries.

Collins said she wasn't embarrassed to ask Gulati about sex, who told her it was unlikely that her night of romance had caused the heart attack. After several weeks of cardiac rehab, she was cleared to resume sexual activity ? advice that surprised her friends. But Collins said the exercise sessions have made her feel fitter than ever.

"A heart attack does not have to be the end of living," Collins said.

Chicago cardiologist Dan Fintel, a professor of medicine at Northwestern University, said he routinely gives heart patients a sex talk on their last day in the hospital, knowing that it's likely on their minds.

"Resuming sexual activity is safe and emotionally part of the healing process, with a few caveats," he tells patients.

Those caveats elicit nervous chuckles when he explains that includes no philandering, given evidence about that causing extra stress.

Book Talk: Absurdist Jim Henson film that wasn't (omg!)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Although he was best-known as a creator of children's puppets like Kermit the Frog, Jim Henson had a parallel career as an experimental filmmaker before "Sesame Street" and "The Muppet Show" made him a household name.

He was even nominated for an Academy Award for an early short film, "Time Piece."

In 1968, Henson and collaborator Jerry Juhl wrote the screenplay for a live-action western, "Tale of Sand," but the movie never got off the ground despite Henson's efforts. It is a darkly comic story of a man pursued across a desert by swordsmen, a lion, a football team, and a mysterious villain with an eye-patch.

"Tale of Sand" is now a graphic novel. Frantic, nearly wordless, and full of absurdist touches such as a light switch that turns day into night, it shows a side of Henson, who died in 1990, that may be unfamiliar to many fans.

The Jim Henson Company's archives director, Karen Falk, who has spent nearly 20 years poring over Henson artifacts and who unearthed the script, spoke to Reuters about the storyteller.

Q: Many of the reviewers who praised the recent Muppets movie cited its warmth and the gentility of the Muppets' world. Is that a part of Henson's legacy?

A: "Jim and (collaborator) Jerry Juhl wanted to present their characters in a positive light and have an optimistic view of the world. That was Jim's mindset, that you should tolerate others' differences. It's not trite. It's a valid way of looking at the world."

Q: Yet 'Tale of Sand' is essentially a black comedy. Was it a case of a younger man trying to find his voice?

A: "There's a lot of funny business, so it's not completely dark. It's just kind of absurd. It really is a product of that late 60s period. People were writing paranoid stories about being in situations and not being able to get out, and this was (their) take on it. Jim felt he was getting pigeonholed as a children's performer. He was trying to regain his reputation as an entertainer for grown-up audiences as well.

"He was on the fence about which way he was going to go, whether he would really pursue the puppets or pursue the filmmaking. He was really pushing his film work before he got involved with 'Sesame Street' in late '68, early '69. That took him in the other direction."

Q: Why do "Tale of Sand" as a graphic novel?

A: "(Artist) Ramon Perez was able to look at a script that was very, very descriptive. There's very little dialogue in the screenplay. Jim was a visual person, very aware of how much sights and sounds could tell what's going on, instead of words."

Q: Where do you see his influence these days?

A: "I see it in Broadway shows. 'Avenue Q' is really a tribute to Jim Henson. Pete Docter, the director of 'Up' and other Pixar films, says the graphic sensibility of Jim Henson was a huge influence. Tim Burton cites Henson as an influence."

Q: You curated the Henson exhibit at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York. Is the craft of puppetry threatened by computer graphics?

A: "It's been around since the beginning of man and will continue to be around. Jim was interested in new technology and certainly embraced early computer animation. I don't think he would have forsaken puppetry. He would have combined them, because he was always looking for the most expressive way of telling a story."

Q: So one shouldn't think of it as just a children's medium?

"Puppetry is much more than that. You see puppets in so many productions, whether it's something like 'War Horse' or 'Avenue Q,' even the 'Madame Butterfly' opera. Artists are incorporating puppetry into theater work, recognizing it as a valid way to tell a story."
