Next weekend I?m off to Columbia SC to get my Ham License. No, this isn?t permission to eat pork, this is my ticket to broadcast on Ham (Amateur) Radio frequencies. Now what does this have to do with survival? Ham Radio has the ability to reach around the world. You can talk to folks in a variety of situations, and stay informed about what?s really happening. You have the ability to call for help, or provide help to others in bad situations when land and cell lines aren?t available.
In times of crisis and natural disasters, amateur radio is often used as a means of emergency communication when wireline, cell phones and other conventional means of communications fail.

During Katrina, local officials relied heavily on Hams to coordinate rescues and organize search and rescue missions throughout the effected areas. Their ability to communicate when the grid goes down is one of the major reasons that I highly advise our readers to look into HAM Radio.

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service? (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment, with their local ARES leadership, for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes.
