After almost an hour and a half of intense questioning, the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency did not move forward with a plan to name Anthony Manetta as the group?s new executive director Tuesday.
Last week, long-time IDA executive director Bruce Ferguson announced he would be stepping down from the post effective as of August. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has pushed Manetta, a former political operative and business consultant based in Babylon, to be his replacement, which must be approved by the IDA?s board of directors. Former chairman of the board Jim Morgo stepped down at last week?s meeting as well.
During the closed-door interview, Manetta was asked about his vision for the IDA, business retention and how he planned to proactively snag companies from other states.
Manetta said he?d like to see more external branding of the organization, which offers assistance such as tax breaks to companies looking to grow or stay in Suffolk County. To do so, he said he plans to work closer with the county?s Department of Economic Development, now a part of the Planning Department.
?I don?t think there?s been an effective communication between the two departments in the past,? Manetta told LIBN. ?We need a working partnership.?
After a lengthy executive session, the majority of which was spent interviewing Manetta, the IDA board returned to open meeting only to adjourn, taking no action. Board members said they had ?not yet completed the process? but would be doing so as soon as possible.
Manetta is the only person the IDA board has interviewed for the executive director position so far. He said he approached Bellone about the position, sending his r?sum? to the county executive and meeting with him prior to the IDA board?s interview.
He has not yet spoken with Ferguson, although he said he plans to do so if and when he is confirmed.
