Iran's dentist to the stars offers views on US

TEHRAN, Iran ? Prior to the Islamic revolution, Iran and America shared very good relations. The former Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, had an army with modern hardware supplied by the U.S. There were direct flights between New York City and Tehran and the city was full of hotels run by major American chains.

But the once-friendly relations between the two nations came to a screeching halt in 1979 when cleric-led radicals ousted the U.S.-backed shah and the subsequent Iran hostage crisis when 52 Americans were held in the U.S. embassy for 444 days.?

These days, Iranians? relations with America are somewhat schizophrenic ? the government is stridently anti-American, but many Iranians are not.?

That is the opposite of other countries in the region where governments receive large amounts of money and military hardware from the U.S., but whose people generally dislike America.

Tehran?s dentist to the stars
A popular dentist in an affluent part of Tehran represents the love-hate relationship many Iranians feel toward the U.S.

In his Park Avenue-style dental practice, the latest Newsweek, Time and Architectural Digest magazines are on offer in the waiting room. A large flat-screen TV sits on the wall, along with an expansive fish tank and a framed dentistry degree from New York University.?

Iranians are consumers who love brand names ? even when it comes to their dental care. When a friend of mine introduced me to the dentist, he told me he is the guy to go to if I wanted to brag about where I get my teeth cleaned. He is, in essence, Tehran?s equivalent of a Beverly Hills ?dentist to the stars.?

A large part of his reputation comes not just from the fact that he has all the latest, modern dentistry equipment, but that he was trained in the U.S. and offers Western-style service. He was educated in dentistry at NYU and lived, worked and studied from the East Coast to West Coast.

Coffee mugs bearing pictures of the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs are on sale as a man works on a MacBook at a shop in northern Tehran on Jan.19, 2012. Despite the fact that Apple observes a U.S. embargo that restricts the sale of their goods in Iran, their products are wildly popular there.

Sporting fashionable glasses, a crisp blue button-down shirt and tie, the dentist, who is in his mid-40s, agreed to speak with me on the condition of anonymity. ?

?I am who I am because of my education in the States,? said the dentist. ?I am very American, but my view on U.S. politics is very different.?

I asked him what he thought about the tough economic sanctions being imposed on Iran ? which block access to the international banking system and hurt?sales of Iranian crude oil ? as a way to persuade Tehran to abandon its nuclear program.

Iranians feel the pain of sanctions: 'Everything has doubled in price'

?Why are there sanctions against Iran?? he said. ?Wasn?t it America that helped Iran fire up its nuclear program 35 years ago? The sanctions just hurt ordinary people.??

At the same time, he praised Iranians? resilience.

?After 30 years of sanctions, embargoes, war and threats of war, Iran has kept its head above water,? he said. ?Most other countries would have collapsed, but Iranians have found ways to circumvent these problems; they help each other.?

NBC News speaks with citizens from around the globe, asking the question, 'What Does America Mean to You?'

The dentist believes that one reason for? misunderstanding between America and Iran is that Americans have little real information on Iran ? that they know only what they see on TV, which is often a very small part of the bigger picture.

For years, he says, he tried to convince American colleagues to give lectures on dentistry in Iran, but that they were reluctant to do so because of their perceptions. When one of them finally agreed to come, and experienced the famous Iranian hospitality and warmth, his perception of Iran changed very quickly.

Asked why he came back to Iran about eight years ago after spending most of his life in the States, he said he just felt like something was missing, adding that he loves Tehran because it?s like New York City ? a noisy, fast-paced 24/7 place.

Steve Jobs photos on the wall
The desire for brand names in Iran that signify Western quality goes beyond dentistry.?

Mohsen, who agreed to speak with me on condition that only his first name be used, owns an electrical goods store in Tehran selling mostly black market Apple products. (Typically, Apple, as well as other imported goods that would be subject to U.S. embargoes, come into Iran via Dubai and the Persian Gulf. They are sold openly in stores in Tehran).?

He said that most Iranians love American products and culture and that personally he longs for the day that the two countries have normal relations.

Then a frown appeared on his face. ?But,? he said, ?they do things that even rub a moderate person, like me, the wrong way.?

?I read an article yesterday about an Iranian-American who went into an Apple store in the States and wanted to buy an iPad to send to her uncle in Tehran. When the sales person found out she was Iranian and wanted to send the iPad to Iran, the store refused to sell it to her,? he said.

?This is crazy! I sell 50 iPads and iPhones here a week. I have a picture of Steve Jobs on the wall! These sorts of things don?t do any good for relations between Iranian and American people.??

The story Mohsen related was widely reported in the U.S. An Apple employee in Atlanta declined to sell an iPad to an Iranian-American customer, citing company policy that aims to comply with U.S. trade sanctions with Iran that can lead to individual fines of up to $250,000. ?

Iran trade sanctions get personal in Apple stores??

In the meantime, Mohsen?s Apple products will have to remain on the black market.?

Still, not all Iranians have such a moderate view towards the U.S. Hussein, a hard-line student at Tehran University, has a very negative view of the States. (He also spoke on condition that only his first name be used.)

?All America has done is try to bully Iran, chip away at its nuclear rights and steal our oil,? Hussein said.

?I don?t think we should be talking to the Americans because ultimately they want our demise,? he said. ?Throughout history, they have interfered in our country, only harming us. We have nothing in common.?

Morsi vows to be president for all Egyptians

Islamist Mohamed Morsi paid tribute on Friday to Egypt's Muslims and Christians alike and symbolically swore himself in as the country's first elected civilian president before a huge crowd at Tahrir Square.

Crowds had thronged the square from early in the day ahead of the president-elect's appearance on the eve of his official swearing-in.

Morsi, who won a run-off election earlier this month, was received with applause by the tens of thousands of people gathered in the birthplace of the revolt that overthrew his predecessor Hosni Mubarak last year.

He promised a "civilian state" and praised "the square of the revolution, the square of freedom," in what he called an address to "the free world, Arabs, Muslims... the Muslims of Egypt, Christians of Egypt."

Morsi symbolically swore himself in before the crowd, saying: "I swear to preserve the republican system... and to preserve the independence" of Egypt.

Before his triumphant arrival, chants against the ruling military which took over on Mubarak's overthrow rang out from among the crowd as people gathered from mid-morning under a searing sun.

In his speech Morsi, whose election has raised concerns among Egypt's sizeable Coptic Christian community, served the United States with advance warning that his politics will be markedly different from those of his ousted predecessor.

He told the Tahrir crowd he would work to secure freedom for Omar Abdul Rahman, a blind Egyptian cleric jailed for life over the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing.

"I will do everything in my power to secure freedom for... detainees, including Sheikh Omar Abdul Rahman," Morsi said in his address to the throng packing the hub of the 2011 revolution.

Abdul Rahman was convicted in 1995 for his role in the World Trade Centre bombing, plotting to bomb other New York targets including the United Nations, and a plan to assassinate Mubarak.

After taking the oath, Morsi will have to contend with the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, headed by Mubarak's longtime defence minister Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, that will retain broad powers after it formally transfers power.

The liberal Wafd newspaper reported that Tantawi will remain defence minister in the new government.

"Down with the power of the military," demonstrators chanted. "Field marshal, tell us the truth -- is Morsi your president or not?"

Their slogans dented hopes expressed in an editorial in the flagship state-owned daily Al-Ahram that announcement of the details of Morsi's swearing-in would end speculation about the military's real intentions.

"The swearing-in should dispel once and for all the doubts raised by those who have used every means to question the military's readiness to hand over power," it said.

-- Differences over power transfer --

-------------------------------------

The Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi resigned after winning the presidency, had called for a huge demonstration in Tahrir, under the slogan "Day of the transfer of power."

The presidency announced late on Thursday that Morsi would be sworn in Saturday before the Constitutional Court, after differences with the army over the transfer of power to the nation's first civilian president.

Morsi "will go at 11 am (0900 GMT) Saturday to the Constitutional Court to take the oath before the Court's general assembly", said a statement released by state news agency MENA.

Traditionally the president takes the oath in parliament, but Egypt's top court has ordered the disbanding of the Islamist-dominated legislature.

The military subsequently assumed legislative powers and also formed a powerful national security council headed by the president but dominated by generals.

By agreeing to be sworn in by the Constitutional Court, Morsi is effectively acknowledging the court's decision to dissolve parliament.

The SCAF also reserves the right to appoint a new constituent assembly should the one elected by parliament be disbanded by a court decision expected on September 1, even though though the Brotherhood insists that only parliament can appoint the assembly.

Media reports said Morsi was consulting a cross-section of Egyptian society before appointing a premier and a cabinet mostly made up of technocrats.

In a meeting with Egyptian newspaper editors reported by most dailies on Friday, Morsi pledged there would be "no Islamisation of state institutions" during his presidency.

Morsi has already met the SCAF chief, as well as a delegation from the Sunni body Al-Azhar, and another representing Egypt's Coptic church.

Amnesty International on Friday urged Morsi to break the cycle of abuse under Mubarak and put Egypt on the path to the rule of law and respect for human rights.

"Egyptians have heard many promises that their demands would be listened to and that things would change, but so far their hopes have largely been frustrated," said Salil Shetty, Amnesty's secretary general.

Ahead of his speech, Morsi attended the main weekly Muslim prayers at Al-Azhar, Sunni Islam's highest seat of learning. Its imam -- religious endowments minister in the outgoing government -- called in his sermon for an inclusive Egypt.

"This must be the homeland of all its citizens with equality between individuals in a true democracy in which all can express themselves while respecting morality," Mohammed Abdel Fadil al-Qawsi said.

The Brotherhood and Al-Azhar, whose imams are named by the Egyptian government, had strained relations under Mubarak, and Qawsi called on Morsi to maintain the institution's privileged position under his presidency.

Hotel Reservation Tricks For Vacationers On A Tight Budget

Travel costs money and most with this money goes toward paying hotel bills during check out. Limiting your enjoyment to successfully have money to repay your hotel reservations isn't the way to have fun. Experience a brand new place to its fullest with a few money saving tips.

Whenever people travel on a budget, first thing that fades out is luxury accommodations. While it might be exciting to rent a simple room which includes a bed and a clean toilet, it doesn't present you with relaxation. Sometimes, poor accommodations might impact the whole experience.

Budget travel and luxury accommodation to hotels like Le Meridien in San Francisco doesn't have to get mutually exclusive. You can get a lot on your limited funds once you know the best time as well as put in making reservations and being smart in regards to the features.

Travelling Off-Season

Peak season is often a nightmare for most people. Hotels tend to be fully booked, airlines make frequent errors, and tourist spots are so full of people, you may not experience anything. All costs double during this period too, with related industries giving tourists no choice other than costly ones.

A money-saving tip is usually to travel at times when no one travels. Hotels like Hotel Madeline Telluride tend to be empty other executives on business trips. To refill rooms, they reduce their rates to floor price. The suite you can not afford during high season may be the cost of a regular room during odd months.

Off-season travel is usually better if you aren't thinking about a vacation destination. Holiday destinations are less condensed with tourists and establishments might not charge you with special marked-up prices for tourists. You can also meet locals easier and go through the culture better without too much globalization.

Prepare Yourself

A lot more than traveling during months other folks don't ordinarily travel, make reservations months before your trip. Discount hotels offer their very best deals for off dates. Just about any element of travel increases in costs if you postpone up until the very end.

Travel having a Group

Apart from sharing the knowledge with family and friends, group trips will be more cost-efficient than traveling on your own. Group rates and deals with discounts and freebies are common over the web. You can even afford conveniences at Le Meridien in San Francisco should you split the bill multiple ways.

Hotel reservations feature features like buffets, spa activities, gym access, and also other features. Only purchase that which you have the time to enjoy. If you are planning to pay all day every day examining the city, you will possibly not need cable tv. Skipping on the internet connection may even help immerse yourself in your travels.

Hotel reservations need not be daunting nor disheartening. You may not even need to compromise on the quality of the relaxation. Thorough planning plus some techniques can provide a high-end travel experience on your low quality traveling.

Budget travel in Australia

I?ve recently been wondering if?Budget Travel in Australia?is possible. I hear so much about it being so expensive and I am wondering just how easy it is to do on a budget. I think that staying in hostels will help to eliminate some of the costs but from what I can tell they are still pretty expensive. Perhaps I should buy a campervan, sleep in it for the entire time and then sell it when i finish my trip, hopefully saving money in the process! Australia is a big country so I?d need to make sure I had enough for petrol!

Wall Street Winces At Zynga Event As Shares Tumble Nearly 5%

Screen Shot 2012-06-26 at 12.18.02 PMIt's been a super tough few months for Zynga and internal morale at the company. After Facebook's lackluster IPO and the lock-up period for employees broke, Zynga shares have slipped more than 30 percent since May. Today could have been a reprieve for the company, which had its big annual launch event today in San Francisco. Shares were up early in the morning, but they dramatically sold off around 11:30 a.m. Pacific time by about 5 percent to $5.79. I'm not sure exactly why this happened -- as no one can ever fully understand the logic (or illogic) of the market -- but it was around the time that the company talked about casino games. It's possible that investors wanted something more certain about the future of Zynga's online gambling and casino revenues.

Give 3-D printing a try? Yoda says do it

15 hrs.

At some point in the not-too-distant future, we?ll all use 3-D printers to make new tools, replacement body parts?and dinner. In the meantime, early adopters are already giving the technology a try with downloadable blueprints for characters such as Yoda, that wise Jedi master of "Star Wars" fame.

The time-lapse?demonstration is courtesy of?YouTube user BusyBotz, who uses a commercial MakerBot Replicator 3-D printer?which costs?about $1,750. The 3-D model for Yoda is available from Thingiverse, a MakerBot-powered website where users share their digital designs.

The website aims to get people to share designs to feed into their 3-D printers, spreading the adoption of the technology, which MakerBot hopes will be widespread so they can sell more printers.

BusyBotz?s demonstration with Yoda showcases the fine detail available when the printer is set to build in 0.1 mm -high layer increments ? that is, Yoda is built up one 0.1 mm layer at a time.?

All things built with the 3-D printers are built layer upon layer.?

"There is a significant increase in detail compared to printing the same model at 0.2 mm," BusyBotz notes. ?It takes longer, but in a print like this, it is worth it.?

For those who view the full video below and think they might want to give one of?these nifty printers a try themselves, just remember this sage advice Yoda gives a young Luke Skywalker:

?Try not, do or do not, there is no try.?

(AP) ? Rielle Hunter says she and former presidential candidate John Edwards have ended their relationship.

Hunter told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday that she and Edwards were still a couple until late last week, as details from Hunter's memoir became public. The breakup was painful, but Hunter said Edwards will still be involved with their daughter, Quinn, who is 4 years old and lives with Hunter.

"We are a family, but as of the end of last week, John Edwards and I are no longer a couple," Hunter said on Tuesday's show. "We decided together to end it."

Asked why the relationship ended, Hunter responded, "I think that's private." She referenced "media scrutiny" the couple had endured but gave no specifics, only saying, "It's hard, and it wears you down after a while."

The book, "What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter and Me," is being released Tuesday through a Dallas-based boutique publisher, BenBella Books. The Associated Press reported on the book last week.

In the book, Hunter describes intimate details about her affair with Edwards, whose campaign hired her as a videographer, and sheds light on his thoughts as federal prosecutors mounted a case against him on illegal campaign contribution charges.

An attorney for Edwards said she would forward to him a message seeking comment.

Prosecutors had accused the Democratic politician of masterminding a scheme to use about $1 million in secret payments from two wealthy political donors to hide his pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.

According to Hunter, Edwards told her he would probably wind up in a low-security prison in Virginia if he was convicted, and Hunter said she planned to move nearby with their daughter if that happened. A judge declared a mistrial last month, and federal prosecutors have opted not to retry Edwards.

Hunter's memoir also includes intimate details about her affair with Edwards as his wife, Elizabeth, was dying of cancer. On Tuesday, Hunter said she felt it was necessary to tell the truth about her relationship, even if doing so was painful for her, Edwards or his other children.

Saying that she still loves Edwards, and that she believes he still loves her, Hunter said Tuesday that she was unsure of the future.

"We'll see what happens," she said. "I have no plans."

(AP) ? Getting an AIDS test at the drugstore could become as common as a flu shot or blood pressure check, if a new pilot program takes off.

The $1.2 million program will offer the free rapid HIV tests at pharmacies and in-store clinics in 24 cities and rural communities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday.

"We believe we can reach more people by making testing more accessible and reduce the stigma associated with HIV," Dr. Kevin Fenton, who oversees the agency's HIV prevention programs, said in a statement.

The tests are already available at seven places, including Washington, D.C., Oakland, Calif., and an Indian health service clinic in Montana. The CDC will soon pick 17 more locations.

The HIV test is a swab inside the mouth; it takes about 20 minutes for a preliminary result. The test maker says it's correct 99 percent of the time. If the test is positive for the AIDS virus, pharmacy employees will refer customers to a local health department or other health care providers for a lab blood test to confirm the results, counseling and treatment. The workers are expected to deliver the news face-to-face and give customers privacy, the CDC said.

An estimated 1.1 million Americans are infected with HIV, but as many as 20 percent of them don't know they carry the virus, according to the CDC. It can take a decade or more for an infection to cause symptoms and illness.

Since 2006, the CDC has recommended that all Americans ages 13 to 64 get tested at least once, not just those considered at highest risk: gay men and intravenous drug users. But fewer than half of adults younger than 65 have been tested, according to the agency's most recent statistics.

It's important to know about infection not only for treating the condition but also to take steps to prevent spreading it to others. An HIV diagnosis used to be a death sentence, but medications now allow those infected to live longer and healthier lives.

On special occasions, health organizations have sent workers to some drugstores to offer HIV testing. This week, Walgreens ? the nation's largest chain of pharmacies ? is teaming with health departments and AIDS groups to offer free tests in 20 cities.

But in that program, health professionals conduct the tests and deliver the news. The CDC program aims to train pharmacy staff to test and deliver the results themselves.

"I'm excited. It's such a new and novel thing for us," said Sarah Freedman, who manages a Walgreens in Washington, D.C., that is participating in the pilot program.

At her pharmacy, prominent signs advertise the test, which is then done in a private room. The pharmacy has also taken steps to let a customer discreetly request the test, putting out stacks of special test request cards ? they look like business cards ? at George Washington University and nearby businesses. Anyone seeking a test can simply hand the card to the clerk, she said.

Only three or four customers have gone through with a test in the first few weeks.

"We get a lot of questions," she said. "Usually they get the information and they go and sit on it and think about it."

The drugstores are expected to keep the test confidential. Pharmacy workers are to refer customers with positive tests to counseling and other services.

When the project ends next summer, CDC officials will analyze what worked well and what didn't, said Paul Weidle, the epidemiologist who is heading up the project.

The program carries both promise and potential pitfalls, said Julie Davids, a longtime advocate who now works for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago.

More testing is a plus, she said. And even if they don't get a free test, signs in the drugstores may prompt people to get tested at a doctor's office or clinic where they feel more comfortable, said Davids.

But Davids said pharmacies more used to handling cholesterol screenings might have difficulty responding to patients who learn in a drugstore they're HIV-positive.

"A person may freeze up and fall apart later," or get emotional on the spot and even talk about suicide, she said.

In addition to Freedman's store, a second Walgreens in Washington is offering the test, as well as branches in Chicago and Lithonia, Ga. The other sites are East Pines Pharmacy in Riverdale, Md., Mike's Pharmacy in Oakland, Calif. and a federal Indian Health Service location in Billings, Mont.

Each location will get enough tests to check 200 to 300 people. Made by OraSure Technologies Inc., the $17.50 test is the only government-approved rapid HIV test that uses saliva. Other rapid tests on the market analyze a finger-prick blood sample. The tests are used routinely in doctor's offices, hospitals and clinics.

The OraSure swab test's stick-like testing device is used to wipe the inside of the mouth, then it is put in a solution, said company spokesman Ron Ticho. If two lines appear, that indicates a positive test.

The company is seeking government approval to sell it over-the-counter for home testing. A decision is expected later this year.

The test is sold in about 40 countries, including Mexico, Italy, South Korea and South Africa. Ticho said he is not aware of another country where pharmacies routinely offer the testing.

Large waistlines are linked to increased mortality risk older people

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Older people with large waistlines have a higher mortality rate than those with a slim waistline. This was shown in a new study conducted by the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Coherent research has shown that being underweight is considerably more dangerous for the elderly than being overweight. A study at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, has now shown that large waist circumference is associated with the risk of increased mortality in the elderly.

30 scientific studies

An international team which includes researchers from the Sahlgrenska Academy has brought together data from a total of 30 scientific studies in order to identify risk factors associated with mortality in people aged 65 to 74 years.

Large waistline increases risk of death

The comprehensive study, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, shows that older men and women who have a large waistline run an increased risk of death -- particularly due to cardiovascular disease -- irrespective of if their Body Mass Index is normal, low, or high.

The results, which were controlled for smoking and age, are based on a five-year follow-up of over 32,000 men and 25,000 women from more than ten countries.

Cardiovascular disease

An unhealthy large waistline is defined in the study as more than 102 centimeters (40 inches) in men and more than 88 centimeters (35 inches) in women. According to the results, a waist circumference of 132 centimeters (52 inches) in men, and 116 centimeters (46 inches) in women, was linked to a doubled risk of death. For cardiovascular death there was a doubling in risk at a waist circumference of 123 cm among men and 105 cm in women.

"People have long known that that a large waistline there is a strong link between disorders of glucose and fat metabolism in the body. The results provide a solid basis for showing that waistlines are an important factor that continues to have a significant effect on health even in the elderly," commented Professor Annika Rosengren, who participated in the study.

Here is where the Information about Demon's that we've collected goes, PM me with the Info and I'll put it all into a super-long Post, or maybe a few posts, but if you really feel the need to, you can post in here yourself. Just make sure it's got a nice amount of info for a nice long post, and eventually we'll end up with a rather large index about those hilariously unnatural residents of Hell.

I'll be getting the first post set up as soon as I set up the WDL's version of this, and then if you have any questions about either, I'll PM the answers to you and then add them to the Topics.

First off, the Ranks:

Demon King's and Demon Queens' have Ranks, and I'll go over these now.

Basically, the Demons are ranked on power, and whenever one is killed or banished, another takes their place. From the way Brenhin and Loki are, in comparison to Illusion, they'd probably be, in the WDL's Ranking System, fairly close to the middle, if not being just above them.

E Demons: The weakest and are usually just pawns for higher up Demons. These are the lackeys, btw.
D Demons: Fairly Powerful, and usually capable of independant thought, but they're usually still forced to serve a higher power.
C Demons: Demons that are almost able to be Demon Kings, but they either have a major weakness, or they're just not strong enough. Still kinda lackeys.
B Demons: These would be the weaker Demon Kings and the Children, until they unlock their full potential, of course, then they'd probably go up to A Rank or such, maybe even S Rank.
A Demons: These are the majority of the Demon Kings and Queens. Mostly fairly powerful, but can still be killed fairly easily. Brenhin could go here, but he might also be an S Demon.
S Demons: Stronger Demon Kings that the WDL knows are a massive threat, such as Loki and Crisis (possibly?). The Council are still a ton stronger than an S Rank, so they're still able to order the rest of Hell around.
SS Demons: Yep, the Council, such as Illusion. Also, the Horsemen are here too, except they're disguising themselves as weaker for now.
X Demons: Demons that the WDL know are the msot dangerous beings ever to grace the mortal realm, and we all know who this is. There's only usually ever one X Demon, just like the Archknight, and it's obviously the Devil this time around.
