The Tide aren't a surprise at the top, but the stats-based ranking system looks quite different than the traditional polls.
Football Outsiders released its end of year F/+ rankings, and unsurprisingly, the Alabama Crimson Tide finished the season as the top ranked team. The Oregon Ducks finished in second, followed by the Florida Gators, Texas A&M Aggies, and Kansas St. Wildcats. Florida and Kansas State finished around 10th in the regular polls, as they were dropped by high profile bowl losses.
Notre Dame, which was fifth in the rankings prior to the BCS title game, dropped down to 11th. Ohio State was the only team to finish the season with a perfect 12-0 record, but they come in at 13th in the final F/+ rankings. Interestingly, Michigan State is 15th in the final rankings, despite a 7-6 record.
The F/+ metric combines play by play explosiveness and drive efficiency. There's a more detailed explanation on the Football Outsiders page, if you're interested.
New Mexico State finished in last place at 124. Sorry, Aggies.
