After the first look of Son Of Sardaar (SOS) hit the screen, the BIG question was: will the film itself live up to expectations. The answer is a resounding ?yes?.

Right from the first frame till the end credits roll, the film keeps the audience entertained. The pace does dip in places, especially during the second half, but the overall result is superb. Another plus: although a remake of the Telugu film Maryada Ramanna, the Hindi version is substantially different with only the basic concept remaining the same.

Apart from the fact that this film is based in Punjab and not in the South as in the original, there are plenty of changes. The other plus is that the writers have not penned a senseless comedy. The cinematic liberties are subtle and they work.

The film is about a man trapped inside a house. If he steps out, he will be killed. If you?re wondering whether the film like this will sustain, you won?t be disappointed. What makes the proceedings especially enjoyable is the brilliant dialogue even though heavily laden with Punjabi flavor.

SOS kicks off by introducing the main protagonist and establishing the kind of person he is. Despite the pace dropping in some places, the film moves very quickly. The main plot ? rivalry between two families ? is introduced in the beginning itself and you know what the story is about. The fun begins as soon as the leading lady is introduced and the main protagonist is trapped in his enemies? home.

STORY: Two families do not see eye-to-eye. The mother of the main protagonist decides to flee with him so that she can save him from the other family. The second family vows to kill every member of the first family. Twenty five years later, the main protagonist returns to his village to sell the family property. Unknowingly, he meets his enemies and ends up going to their house. When they realise he?s Enemy No 1, they decide to kill him. Since they don?t want any bloodshed in their home, they try to lure him out of their house. The main protagonist learns of their evil intentions and decides to stay inside. What follows forms the crux of the film.

As mentioned earlier, the film kicks off very well. The chemistry between the leading jodi has been conveyed brilliantly, even if their feelings for each other evolve a little too quickly. Also, the relationship between Arjan Bajwa and Sonakshi Sinha is a little confusing. Initially, they appear to be very much in love and are looking forward to getting married while Arjan?s sudden ?NO? to the wedding doesn?t gel.

The climax too is a little abrupt. After Sanjay Dutt and his team waited 25 years to take revenge, how come the sudden change of heart? Ditto with Tanuja?s character, which changes very suddenly. The second half focuses on the romantic element while the revenge drama takes a back seat. Also, the four back-to-back songs in the second half make the proceeding drag a little.

Having said that, SOS is replete with entertaining moments and you tend to forgive the bits that don?t work. One of the major highlights of the film, obviously, is Salman Khan. The train sequence, where Ajay Devgn meets Sonakshi Sinha is hilarious as is the sequence where Mukul Dev chases Devgn. Ditto for Mukesh Rishi?s sequence. Every character delivers a brilliant performance and together they make the film very enjoyable. Apart from the comic scenes, the pre-climax and climax fight sequences are superbly presented and are a major highlight of the film.

This is Ashwini Dhir?s third film and he is in his element. From One Two Three to Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge and now Son Of Sardaar, he has definitely raised the bar in entertaining the audience. Full marks to him for brilliant direction and dialogue. Complimenting his presentation is the cinematography by Aseem Bajaj. It is outstanding. Action (Jai Singh Nijjar), of course, is another highlight and music (Himesh Reshammiya) yet another trump card. The songs are not only catchy but the lyrics are beautiful, especially the Bichchdan song. Background score is excellent too.

Performance-wise, Ajay Devgn is the soul of the film. Whether action, comedy or emoting through his expressions? he is outstanding! Sonakshi Sinha looks beautiful and delivers her best performance to date. Sanjay Dutt is in his element and plays his part with panache. Juhi Chawla is a sheer pleasure whenever she appears on screen. Her performance is another asset for Son Of Sardaar. Mukesh Rishi in a brief appearance makes his presence felt. Vindoo Dara Singh is excellent. Mukul Dev is outstanding. Tanuja is a delight. Arjan Bajwa is just about okay. The rest of the cast lends adequate support.

Verdict: A spectacular Diwali treat. Go for it! Blockbuster.
