Walking at work | Nurse Uncut Australia

Linda Mottram on ABC radio 702 this morning did a segment on jobs that keep you fit. A woman rang in and and said that her daughter, an RN, had worn a pedometer?to work out of curiosity and discovered that she walked 8.4 kilmetres in one shift.

A later caller rang to say that he?d calculated this meant that in one year?s work?that nurse would walk the equivalent of Sydney to Brisbane and back (around 2000 kilometres).

Of course, moving around is better than sitting still in a job -?but the kinds of walking that nurses do and the kinds of mental and sometimes physical stress they?re experiencing at work might act to counter some of the health benefits that come from walking.

It also has to be said that just as in the population in general now, there?s a sizeable proportion of overweight nurses and midwives, so the job doesn?t automatically make us pictures of health.? There are studies that show that those who work night shift?tend to put on weight, with concomitant health issues. And there are studies that show that only about one third of nurses take regualr exercise outside of work.

Nurse Uncut is curious ? do you feel that your nursing job keeps you physically active and fit? Or does it work against that (perhaps you?re a community nurse and spend a fair amount of time driving?)

What steps do you take to keep in shape?
